It wasn't exactly the Valentine's Day massacre, but, the Oran High School girls basketball teams picked up two double-digit wins on the road last night at Class 4 Dexter. The junior varsity won 49-39. The varsity, in surprisingly easy fashion, prevailed 68-45.
In the opener, the Lady Eagles led 14-6 after one and were up 28-20 at the break. Oran expanded the margin to 33-26 heading into the final period. A rally by the Lady Bearcats cut the deficit, but it was too little, too late and the Eagles picked up the 10 point win.
Katie Webb was one of three that scored in double-figures, as balanced scoring was a theme from last night, She had 14 points in three-quarters of action. She hit both of her free throw attempts. Heather Gosche ended up with 13. She made her only free throw shot. Taylor Lowes finished with 10. She hit two from beyond the arc and made both of her free shots.
Mallory Lowes had eight and made both of her free throw attempts. Savannah Below added four.
The girls were seven of eight from the line for an excellent 88%.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "We came out and moved the ball well against their zone and knocked down some open shots. We had really good balanced scoring and were able to hold them off down the stretch. It was a good team effort against a good opponent."
They improved to 9-1.
The varsity contest did not start out well for the Eagles. They turned the ball over on their first two possessions and were down 4-0 before they found their groove. From that point, Oran outscored Dexter, 21-12 to end the first up 21-16. Katelyn Streeter had a huge first period as she knocked down three straight three's.
The Eagles pulled away in the second and took a 40-20 lead into the locker room. Oran padded the margin by three in the second half to pick up the 23 point win over the #6 ranked team in Class 4.
We had mentioned in the St. Vincent post how the team had made a couple of statement wins over district opponents. Last night was a signature win. We used #SignatureWin last night in the final score tweet (even though it took a couple of tries) and coach Evans mentioned it during his interview after the game with the reporter from the Dexter Statesman. A link to the story and their photo gallery is provided just above the "score by quarters" for your viewing pleasure.
Coach Evans said, " This was a huge win for the program. Dexter is missing a starter but they are a really good team that is always tough. The girls did a good job of hitting some big outside shots during the first half and we really played lockdown defense during the second quarter. I can't say enough about the great total team effort we displayed."
The Eagles only had four players score, but they all reached double-digits.
Leah Cauble led the way as she posted a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Jessie Long had 15 points and five boards. Streeter finished with 12, all of which came from beyond the arc, while Kaylee Payne scored 10 and had four rebounds.
Claire Ramsey did not score, but she had a team-high seven assists. She also grabbed four rebounds.
From inside the arc, they hit 16-27 for 59%. From beyond, they were 8-24 for 33%. The connected on 12-14 free throws for 86%.
The varsity girls are now 18-4.
Both squads will close the regular season tonight at conference foe Scott City. There will be 2 periods of junior varsity action at 6 pm followed by the varsity.
