C2D2 opens with pair of easy wins

The Oran High School basketball teams picked up a couple of easy wins last night in the opening round of the Class 2, District 2 tournament at the Perry Park Center in Perryville.

The girls' squad, the number-one seed, faced a winless 8th-seed Bismarck Indians team.  The Lady Eagles started slow offensively but led 6-0 before the Indians hit a free throw at the 6:21 mark.  Oran was up 28-3 after the first and it was 58-11 at halftime.

If there was any doubt about the outcome, the Eagles pushed it away with a 27-1 margin in the third as they soared to an 89-21 blowout.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "Even though we didn’t shoot the ball well we got after it well both offensively and defensively. It was a good game to get our feet wet in this gym."

Leah Cauble outscored the Indians on her own, despite playing just a little more than two quarters.  She hit for 37 points.  She was 15-17 from inside the arc and also added a trey and had eight rebounds.  Kaylee Payne also saw limited action but put up 15 points, had five rebounds, four steals and three assists.  She also hit one from beyond the arc.  Jessie Long had a double-double with 10 points and 11 steals.  She grabbed eight boards and she too hit a three-pointer.

Madison Ramsey hit two shots from beyond the arc to account for her six points.  Claire Ramsey finished with five.  She hit a three, as well.  Katie Webb had four points and Mallory Lowes had two.

They hit 31-49 inside the arc for 63% and 7 of 34 from beyond for 21%.  At the line, 6-12 for 50%.

The girls improved to 20-4 and will play 4) Valle Catholic on Monday at 6 pm.

Every Eagle saw playing time during the contest.

The boys also started out a little slow.  In fact, neither team was able to dent the scoreboard until Drew Reischman scored in close with  6:20 on the clock to give Oran the lead.  They never looked back after that.  The Eagles were up 27-2 after the first period and expanded that to 49-6 heading into the locker rooms.  The boys also able to play their entire bench and rolled to the 82-21 win.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we played with a lot of energy and effort and was able to get some turnovers for easy points. Now we have to be ready to practice Monday and prepare for Chaffee who beat us the last time we played. It was really nice to have all of the fan support which helps give us energy when we are playing and hopefully we will continue to have a good crowd."

Fourteen Eagles reached the scoring column, led by Jacob Shoemaker's 17.  He hit a three-pointer.  Layne Johnson had 15.  Reischman finished with 10.

Peyton McVay had nine, Cole Priggel seven, Denver Elfrink six, Todd Priggel had five with a three. Tyson Goodale had four.  Cooper Priggel, Calen Read and Langdon Scheeter had two apiece. William Kluesner, Avery Mitchem and Joey Phillips each hit free toss.

The boys hit 12 of 22 from the charity stripe for 55%.

The second-seed Eagles, 19-5, will square off with # 3 Chaffee for the third time this season on Tuesday at 7:15 pm.  The teams have split the two previous meetings.
