Baseball drops 2 to open season

Saturday seemed more like the Ides of March than St. Patrick's Day as the Oran High School Eagles baseball team lost both games they played in Portageville.  The Eagles fell to the host Bulldogs 6-1 in the first contest and were defeated by the East Carter County Redbirds 12-6 in the second.

Layne Johnson got the start in game one and he scattered two hits over three scoreless innings, in the meantime, Oran used a one-out triple by Cole Priggel in the top of the third followed by an rbi single by Todd Priggel to take a 1-0 lead.  But, in the bottom of the third, a walk followed by back-to-back doubles ended Johnson's day.  Cole Priggel came in in relief.  He struck out the first batter he faced, but then a single, a groundout, a walk and home run followed by another single ended Cole's pitching performance with the Eagles down 6-1.  Sophomore Kaden Hargrove was the third pitcher of the inning.  He walked the first hitter he faced but got a pop out to end the frame.

Ty Johnson legged out an infield single to the hole at short to led off the fourth, Peyton McVay sacrificed him to second, but the next two batters struck out.

In the fifth, Todd Priggel picked up his second hit of the day, a one-out single, and the next two batters walked.  Portageville made a pitching change and all three were stranded as once again, the next two struck out.

A leadoff walk and a two-out hit batsman were stranded in the sixth.

In the seventh, the Eagles were given back-to-back one-out walks, but once again Oran could not come up with that big hit, they needed.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Hargrove allowed only a sixth-inning single as he retired seven of the nine he faced.

Layne Johnson took the loss going three-plus innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits.  He struck out four and walked one.  Cole Priggel went two-thirds of an inning and gave up three hits, three runs, all earned. He walked one and struck out one.  Hargrove threw two and one-third scoreless innings allowing only one hit and one base on balls.

Todd Priggel had two singles for Oran, who only managed four hit in the game.  Cole Priggel had the only extra-base hit for the Eagles with his third-inning triple.  Oran was given eight walks however and ended up stranding 12 baserunners.

In game two, the Eagles never led.

Drew Reischman gave up a two-out two-run home run in the top of the first.

During the bottom of the opening frame, the Eagle cut the margin in half.   Layne Johnson led off with a walk,  He advanced to second on a Todd Priggel single and eventually scored on a two-out rbi single by Denver Elfrink.

The Eagles did manage to tie the game in the second with a two-out double by Johnson and another single by Todd Priggel.

But staying even was short-lived.

The Redbird third saw Oran give up three runs on three hits and two errors.

The Eagles did get one of those runs back in their half but could have had much more.

Cole Priggel, Elfrink and Jacob Shoemaker each walked to start the inning.  Priggel scored on a double play groundout and the other two were stranded.

East Carter added a single tally in the fourth without a hit.

A leadoff walk got to third thanks to an error and a wild pitch.  With two outs an infield error allowed that baserunner to score.

Oran cut the margin after four to 6-5.  Ty Johnson singled to start the home-half,  Layne Johnson doubled to move Ty to third.  They both scored on a Todd Priggel sacrifice fly.

Todd Priggel relieved Reischman in the fifth.  East Carter used a pair of singles, a walk and another Eagle error to plate two.

In the sixth, Oran allowed one single, three walks, a hit batter and an error to give three more runs to the Redbirds.  Freshman Ty Johnson relieved in the inning.

The Eagles trailed 11-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

East Carter tried to let Oran back into it, but the Eagles were not receptive.  The first three walked again for Oran and once again only one would score, this time on a wild pitch.

The Eagles would give up another unearned run in the seventh after a couple of walks and an error and Oran fell to 0-2 with the 12-6 loss.

Reischman took the "L" going four innings. He gave up seven hits, allowing six runs, four earned.  He struck out five and walked one.  Todd Priggel threw one and two-thirds innings, allowed three hits, five runs (three earned).  He struck out thee and walked three.  Ty Johnson recorded one and one-third innings. He allowed one unearned run and walked three.

Layne Johnson had a pair of double for the Eagles and crossed the plate three times.  Todd Priggel had two hits and three runs driven in.  Elfrink had had a pair of hits and drove in one.  Reischman also added a double.  Shoemaker reached base all four trips to the plates with four walks.

Oran was gifted 12 base on balls during the game.  They stranded 14 baserunners and 26 total in the two games combined..

Clay Sauceda did not play in either game, as he was out with concussion-like symptoms.

Oran is scheduled to host Bloomfield on Tuesday at 4:30.
