JV boys take crown

The Oran High School boys junior varsity basketball team came into the Scott-Miss tournament as the number-two seed.  They advanced to the finals and faced the fourth-seeded Kelly Hawks, who had upset the top-seeded East Prairie Eagles on Tuesday.  Last night the Eagles picked up a 57-43 victory to claim the championship.

Oran led 13-11 after one period and it was 26-22 at the break.  The Hawks reduced the margin to three, 50-47, heading into the final seven minutes.  The Eagles hit enough free throws to hang on and even expand the lead to 14 points.

Dane Shands led the Eagles with 13 points.  Seth Cauble and Nick Romas had 10 apiece.  Cauble hit a trey.

Cameron Westrich had nine.  Samuel Shoemaker scored seven.  Kaleb Gosche and Logan Rose rounded out the scoring with four each.

The team hit 12 of 22 from the line for 55%

They improved to 13-4.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "The boys played a very tough opponent in Kelly for the Championship.  Kelly had two kids that gave us matchup problems.  One kid was about 6’2 or 6’3 who could handle the ball and get to the rim as well as pull up and hit a jumper over our smaller defenders. The other kid. a post player that was also 6’2 and very tough to handle down low.  In the first half we had some kids get in some foul trouble and had to sit them but we were able to take a lead into halftime.  We were able to make some adjustments to how we wanted to defend their better players and were able to come out with a Scott-Miss. JV Tournament Championship.  I’m proud of the kids for playing hard and being determined to win.  It was also good to see these kids win a conference tournament as they haven’t been able to in Jr. High or in JV."

They will travel to Bloomfield on Monday.
