Lady Eagles prevail in Perryville

The Oran High School girls basketball teams made the sixty-minute trek north last night to take on the Lady Indians of St. Vincent.  The junior varsity eked out a 41-38 win, while the varsity rolled, 77-28.

In the opener, the junior varsity appeared to be sleepwalking during the early going.  But, they woke up enough to hold a 9-6 lead after one.  It appeared they might blow the game wide open.  They led 23-12 at the intermission and 38-24 heading into the final period.  But, just like that, they went back into a trance and were outscored 14-3 to cut the final margin to three.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "We were able to do just enough to hang on for the victory. We need to do a better job of taking good shots and making free throws down the stretch."

Traci Hency and Mallory Lowes led the way with 10 each.  Lowes hit a pair of treys.

Hope Woodfin had eight.  She also hit two from beyond the arc.  Katie Webb added six during her two quarters of play.  Hannah Boshell, Rylee Boshell and Alyssa Spane each chipped in a field goal.

As a team, they hit only 3 of 9 free throws for 33% and just 1 of 6 during the fourth-quarter collapse.

They improved their record to 13-3.  They will close out their season on Wednesday at Dexter.  Game time is 6 pm.

In the nightcap, Oran came up empty on its first two possessions but then Leah Cauble was fouled, hit both attempts and the floodgates opened.  At the 5:52 mark, the hosts took a timeout and the Lady Eagles were up 10-0.  By quarter's end, Cauble had scored 24 of her game-high 43 and the score was 33-3 and the rout was on.

Coach Evan said, "The girls came out on fire and were able to put this one away early. Our defensive pressure really got to them and led to some easy baskets. It was a good district win."

Oran has the number one seed in the upcoming district tournament and the Lady Indians are at number three.  But St. Vincent only lost to second-seeded Chaffee by two points during the regular season, so last night's 49 point win surely made a statement about any thoughts of a potential upset down the road.

Cauble had six treys and six rebounds.  Kaylee Payne finished with 14 and two from beyond the arc.  She was 4-4 from the line and had seven rebounds, four assists and seven steals.

Jessie Long had six points and seven boards.  She now has 1,200 career points.  Madison Ramsey also had six points with all her points coming from beyond the arc.   Hope Woodfin had four off the bench, including a trey.  Heather Gosche and Katie Webb each added a field goal.  Webb also had seven rebounds.

They were  17-33 from inside the arc for 52% and 11-30 from beyond for an improved 38%.  At the line, they hit 10-14 for 71%.

They are now 18-5 and will travel to Dexter on Wednesday, before closing out the regular season at home on Thursday against Scott City.  It is varsity only and it is Lil Cheer night.  It starts at 6 pm.
