Varsity controls third quarter and stuns Park Hills Central

The varsity Oran High School girls basketball team played in The Jackson Lady Indians shoot out yesterday, facing a Park Hills Central Lady Rebels team that was coming in with a 16-2 record and were receiving votes in the most recent Class 4 coaches' poll.

Oran trailed 13-10 after one.  Kaylee Payne hit a running three-pointer just before the halftime horn to make the score 28-26. 

Katlyn Streeter hit a three from the left wing, her only points in the game,  on the Eagles' first possession of the second half, to give Oran a lead they would never relinquish. 

The Eagles outscored the Rebels 23-7 to take a 49-35 lead into the final eight minutes.  Park Hills made a run, but Oran was able to withstand and picked up a 65-59 win.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "We came out a little flat in the first half but Kaylee’s three at the halftime buzzer gave us some much-needed momentum that carried us in the third quarter. This was a nice win for the team."

Leah Cauble topped the Eagles with 27 points,  she hit one from beyond the arc and both free throw attempts.  Kaylee Payne finished with 14 made three three's and had a team-high four assists and four steals.  Jessie Long also had double-digit scoring with 12 and had six rebounds.

Katie Webb had nine points and six boards and Streeter rounded out the scoring with her trey.

The girls were 21-30 from inside the arc for 70% and 6 of 21 from beyond for 29%.  At the line, they were 5 of 9 for 56%.

They improved to 15-5.

The varsity will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Woodland.  There is no junior varsity contest.  Tip time is 6 pm.
