Last night, the Oran High School boys basketball teams hosted conference foe, Kelly. The Eagles picked up a pair of hard-fought wins. The junior varsity won 52-42 and the varsity, 51-47.
In the opener, Oran trailed 14-7 after one but took the lead 20-18 with 1:31 remaining before the half. Oran was up 25-24 at the intermission. After three, it was tied at 36. The Eagles owned the fourth, outscoring Kelly 16-6 to claim the ten-point victory.
Kolten Payne led all scorers with 13, including a trey.
Seth Cauble, Nick Romas and Camdyn Triblett each had nine. Diesel Cato added eight and he hit one from beyond the arc. Landon Cochran and Robby Menz each had a field goal.
They were 15-22 from the line for 68%.
The jayvee is now 4-0 in conference and 10-1 overall.
Coach Bickings said, "It wasn't a great game for us. But I did tell them in the locker room than an ugly win is still a win. I didn't think we came out ready to play. We had too many turnovers early on and also we missed a lot of assignments on our press. I didn't think we shot the ball extremely well early on and Kelly shot the lights out in the 1st quarter. I was happy with the way we moved the ball around at the end of the game. We looked a lot better when we passed the ball quickly and cut instead of catching and dribbling. We will have to play better than we did tonight on Friday as we have another tough matchup at St. Vincent."
After the varsity had defeated Kelly by forty to claim the championship of the O.I.T. in early December Oran knew they would have their work cut out for them.
In the nightcap, the Eagles trailed 12-9 after one but tied the score at 19 heading into the halftime locker room. Over the first two minutes of the third quarter, Oran went on an 8-0 run to take a 27-19 lead. Heading into the fourth the Eagles led 36-32. After a harrowing fourth quarter, Oran held on for a four-point win.
The Eagle lead was 5 42-37 with 4:44 remaining. With 2:58 left it was 45-39, but a minute later it was 46-44 and with 59.1 left it was tied at 47. Ty Johnson scored on a putback with 33.3 left to give Oran a two-point margin. After a time-out, Kelly brought the ball down the court, working the ball from the right-corner to near the top of the key where they took a three-point shot in a game-winning attempt, but it clanged off the rim and was grabbed by Tyson Goodale with 7.8 remaining and he was immediately fouled, but in the bedlam, the whistle could not be heard and the clock kept running. After the officials huddled, they decided to put 10 seconds on the clock.
After a Hawk time out. Goodale calmly sank both ends of the one and one. And this time when he grabbed the missed Kelly attempt, the clock ran out and the Eagles had secured the victory.
Goodale led the Eagles with 18 points, including a trey. He scored all the Eagles points in the first quarter. Johnson finished with 17 and he had a three. Langdon Scheeter, who landed awkwardly early in the first quarter but walked off on his own power was able to come back later in the period, ended up with 11 and he hit a pair of threes.
Cooper Priggel hit one from beyond the arc and scored five.
Johnson and Goodale each grabbed five rebounds to share the team-high. Johnson dished out five assists which were a team most.
Oran was 10-13 from the line for 77% and they hit 9-11 in that frenetic fourth quarter. They were 13-23 from inside the arc for 56.5% and 5-21 from beyond for 23.8%. The Eagles were outrebounded 23-20 but forced 23 turnovers and committed 14 of their own.
Oran travels to district rival St. Vincent on Friday. The jayvee will tip at 6 pm.
