Eagles split at Woodland

The Oran High School boys basketball teams traveled to Woodland High School last night where they split a pair of games with the Cardinals.  The junior varsity, who had defeated Woodland by 29 in the first round of the Advance JV Tournament, tasted defeat for the first time, losing 52-50.  The varsity Eagles scored the first 35 points of the game over about the initial period and-a-half and rolled to a mercy-rule 70-25 win.

During the opener, the jayvee trailed by two after one.  The margin was five at the break, it was back to two heading into the fourth and that was the way it ended.

Nick Romas led all scorers with 16, including two treys.

Seth Cauble and Camdyn Tribblet had nine each.  Cauble hit one from beyond the arc.  Kolten Payne had eight while hitting two from long-range.  Robby Menz scored five including one trey and Diesel Cato rounded out the scoring with three.

Coach Joe Bickings commented, "I thought last night was a good game for us to be in as it challenged us.  We played Woodland earlier in the year in the Advance JV Tournament and beat them but this time they had 3 other players playing down that have played a lot of varsity minutes for them. We suffered our first defeat of the season which isn't always a good thing but we have to learn from our mistakes to get better.  I think the game came down to us not being able to rebound and we had too many turnovers.  It was the first game that we were tested and it showed that we haven't been in those type of games yet.  I think the players were upset that we lost and will come ready to practice to get ready to play Meadow Heights on Friday"

In the nightcap, Tyson Goodale led all scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds, He hit one trey in three quarters of action.  Cooper Priggel also played just three, he finished with 13 points he hit four from beyond the arc.  Langdon Scheeter put in 12 24-minutes.

Ty Johnson had nine points and a team-high five assists while not playing the fourth period. Dane Shand had six. Samuel Shoemaker scored five, Kaiden Massey and Logan Rose had three.

Oran was 14 of 26 from the line for 53.8% they were 19 of 42 from inside the arc for 45.2% and from beyond they hit six of 15 for 40%.  They outrebounded the hosts 38 -21.  The Eagles committed nine turnovers and forced 28.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "The boys came out with good energy and effort. We focused on blocking out, defense and not turning the ball over in practice and we played better in those areas. We made some adjustments in our press defense and I was also pleased with that. We will need to continue that improvement in practice this week."

The jayvee is now 8-1 and the varsity is 10-2.  They will be back in action when they host Meadow Heights on Friday at 6 pm.
