The Oran High School girls basketball teams traveled to Notre Dame Regional High School last night to take on the Class 4 Lady Bulldogs, who received votes in the most recent Coaches' Poll. The Lady Eagles dropped both contests. The junior varsity who had not played in six and a half weeks lost 35-28 and the varsity, who had been idle about three and a half weeks, hung tight through three quarters but lost 53-28.
In the opener, Oran led 8-5 after one and it was tied 16-16 at the half, It was 21 all after three, but the jayvee got doubled-up 14-7 in the fourth.
Haley Webb led the Eagles (1-1) with seven points, including a three. Emma Priggel scored six. Grace Davis and Daley Siebert had four apiece. Rylee Boshell, Traci Hency and Laney Shy each scored two and Hannah Boshell rounded out the scoring with a single tally.
They were only 9-21 from the line for 42.8%
Coach Ethan Evans said, "The girls did a great job getting up, guarding and getting in the passing lanes. We had way too many turnovers and missed a lot of free throws. We were a little rusty coming off a long layoff."
In the nightcap, Oran led 15-11 after one but trailed at the break 22-19 and 29-27 heading into the fourth but was outscored by 13 to turn a close game into a double-digit loss.
Kaylee Payne led all scorers with 14, including a trey and seven rebounds. Katie Webb finished with 10 points and also grabbed seven boards.
Taylor Lowes and Heather Gosche had six apiece and Gracie Davis rounded out he scorring with two.
Payne, Davis and Hope Woodfin each had two assists.
They were seven of nine from the line, all from Payne, for 77.8%. From inside the arc, they were 14-34 for 41.2%. They were only 1 of 12 from beyond for 12.5%.
As a team, they committed 25 turnovers.
Evans commented, "We just ran out of steam in the 4th quarter. Notre Dame is a good team and they turned us over a ton. We need to use this game as a building block for future tough games and learn to put together 4 quarters."
The varsity is now 6-3.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Thursday at 6, when they travel to take on conference foe East Prairie.
