Lady Eagles end losing streak to Saxony

The Oran High School varsity girls basketball team ended a five-game losing streak to Saxony Lutheran last night with a 56-45 win at home.  The two teams had met in December for third-place of the Holiday Classic and the Crusaders had won that one 63-50.

The last time the Eagles had won was in the Championship game of the Delta New Year's tournament in January of 2017, 64-62 in overtime.

Oran led 14-8 after one and 22-15 after the break and 36-26 heading into the fourth, but the perennial class-three power, who was missing some players made a run in the fourth and took 43-42 lead with 3:37 remaining in the game.  From there, the Eagles went on an 11-2 run to close out the game.  Thanks in large part to freshman, Grace Davis, who hit 9 of 10 from the line during the fourth.

Kaylee Payne led all scorers, before fouling out late, with 18, she hit three threes.  Davis finished with 11.

Taylor Lowes had nine, including a trey.  Katie Webb and Hope Woodfin both scored eight, with a three-pointer each.  Traci Hency rounded out the scoring with a field goal.

They were 12-20 from the line for 60%.  No other stats were available.  The varsity improved to 10-3 and will be back in action on Wednesday at Meadow Heights at 6 pm.  Once again it will be varsity only.

Coach Larry Boshell said, "The girls played their hearts out.  Defensively, I felt we really got after it and didn't give up many open looks or easy buckets.  Offensively, we put in a new offense Sunday as we thought they would come out in a man defense.  We ran it pretty well but we have to develop a bit more patience and not force it so much, but that will come with more reps in practice and games.  Hopefully, we continue to get better on both ends of the floor."

" We had a nice lead but Saxony battled back and went up by one, but we settled down and got a couple of easy buckets and then hit our free throws down the stretch.  I was so proud of this group the way they regained composure and finished the game off with a win," He added.
