Boys advance in Scott-Miss tourney

On Saturday, the Oran High School boys basketball teams began play in the Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament being held at Delta.

Both squads won.  The varsity played first and defeated Scott County Central 72-61. The jayvee rolled Chaffee 75-35.

The Braves scored the first four points put the Eagles went on a 12-0 run, looking like the team we expect to see.  after one it was Oran up 24-18.  At the half, the Eagles led 39-27.  Scott County outscored the Eagless 34-33 in the final 16 minutes and the top-seeded Eagles held on for the 11 point win over the eighth-seeded Braves.

Cooper Priggel led Oran with 21 points.  He hit six from beyond the arc.
Three other Eagles scored double-digits.  Ty Johnson had 17.  He had three threes and was 4-4 from the line.  Tyson Goodale had 15, including a trey and had a team-high seven rebounds.  Langdon Scheeter scored 11 and had a team-high six assists.

Samuel Shoemaker added six points and Cameron "Big Dawg" Westrich added a field goal to round out the scoring.

They made 12 of 19 from the line for 63.2%, 15 of 36 from inside the arc for 41.7% and 10 of 26 from beyond for 38.5%.    They were outrebounded 36-31 but won the turnover battle 26-18.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "We didn't play very well but we were able to secure the win and advance to the second round of the conference tournament.  We play Kelly in the semifinals which will be the third time we have played them this year.  This will be a tough task for us.  Monday's practice will determine a lot on how well we will compete on Tuesday."

Game time Tuesday is scheduled for 6:30 pm at Delta High School.

During the junior varsity game, number-one seeded Oran raced out to a 21-8 first quarter lead over the eighth-seeded Chaffee Red Devils on the way to a forty-point win.

Camdyn Triblett led all scorers with 17 points, including a three-pointer.  Kolten Payne had 12 which included three treys.

And once again, the Eagles put 11 in the book.

Seth Cauble had nine, including one from beyond the arc. Robby Menz also had nine.  Diesel Cato scored seven including a "three."  Landon Cochran and Nick Romas both scored five. Luke Peterson added four.  Parker Diebold hit a trey.  Robby Menz and Riley Schlosser each added two.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "The last two games we came out and had a really good first half.  We were able to put pressure on the ball and create turnovers so we could run the floor and get easy baskets.  We were also able to share the basketball around and get 11 different people in the scoring column.  Next up we have a very tough matchup against Oak Ridge that we beat on a buzzer-beater last week.  It's tough to beat the same team twice in a season much less in a week.  We will have to come ready to play if we want to advance in the conference tournament."

They improved to 15-2 and will face Oak Ridge at 4 pm Tuesday in Delta.
