Lady Eagles celebrate Senior NIght with wins

The Oran High School Girls basketball teams hosted the Woodland Cardinals last night.  It was Senior Night.  The jayvee won 36-30.  The varsity prevailed 75-46.

In the opener, the junior varsity was playing its first game in a week and a half, and it showed.  Oran trailed most of the first period but managed an 8-7 lead heading into the second.  It was 19-13 Eagles at the break and Oran was up 25-18 heading into the fourth.  With 4:53 remaining in the game the Cardinals led 26-25.  Oran closed the game with an 11-4 run.  Thanks in large part to Traci Hency who scored 7 of her game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter.

Hency's points included a trey.

Haley Webb had eight points and went 4-4 from the line. Emma Priggel scored six, Taylor Hobbs had five including a three-pointer.  Hannah Boshell and Grace Davis added two apiece.

They were 6 of 8 from the free throw line and improved to 8-1.

Asst Coach Amy Pobst said, "came out looking a bit rusty.  Unfortunately when you have over a week off that happens.  I felt we played hard and came away with some good things to work on."

In the nightcap, the varsity who had been idle for a week jumped out big early. At the 4:17 mark of the first, when Woodland took time out, the Lady Eagles were up 15-1.  It was 19-5 after one and 42-17 at the half, and Oran went on to the 29-point win, with a substantial part of the fourth played with a running clock.

Kaylee Payne led the victors with 16 points.  She had two threes as did Taylor Lowes, who scored 14.

Katie Webb had eight points, Mallory Lowes scored seven with a trey.  Traci Hency and Sam Welter had six each.  Hope Woodfin had five including a three-pointer.  Paige Bradley added four.  Kennedi McVay hit a three for her points.  Grace Davis, Heather Gosche and Haley Webb each scored two.

They were only 4 of 16 at the charity stripe.  They improved their record 18-3.  Despite the 29-point victory, they looked sloppy at times.  Possibly due to the large number of player combinations used.

Pobst said, "This was a great game for our senior night.  It was nice to be able to get everyone into the game and have all of our seniors score.  We were able to work on a few different things in a game situation that we have been working on in practice.  At the same time, there were some areas that we were weak at and will be focusing on over the next couple of days as we prepare for a strong Poplar Bluff team on Thursday and look to head into the postseason."

Five Senior players were honored before the start of the contest:  Paige Bradley, Heather Gosche, Taylor Lowes, Kaylee Payne and Samantha Welter.
