Eagles Bring Back 2 Victories from Cape County!

A day that started drizzly and dreary turned into a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for the Eagles as they scored 16 runs in each game to claim two wins during the Notre Dame Classic.

In the first game Oran got on the board first after Preston Hahn reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and then scored on Drew Reischman's two-out rbi single to left.  The run gave starting pitcher Thomas Trankler an early lead.

Dexter came back with three runs of their own, only one was earned, in the bottom of the first.

Oran picked up their second run in the second inning as Ben Heuring ripped a one-out double down the left field line, advanced to third on Tanner McVay's single and then scored on Trankler's sacrifice fly.

The Eagles seized the lead in the third with consecutive singles by Jacob Priggel, Hunter Schlosser and Reischman.  The last drove in Priggel to tie the game at three.  Schlosser scored the go ahead run on when Clay Sauceda grounded into a double play.

Oran led 4-3 after three innings and would never trail again but getting the victory would not be easy.

Both teams would add a single tally in the fourth inning.  The Eagles got theirs, an unearned run, after Heuring led off with his second double of the day.  He advanced to third when McVay reached on an error and scored on a ground ball fielder's choice hit by Trankler.

A five-run fifth opened up a 10-4 lead for Oran giving them some breathing room.  But, Dexter came right back with five of their own in the bottom half.

The Eagle half of the inning was high-lighted by a two-run two-out triple by Jacob Priggel.

After five innings Oran clung to a slim 10-9 lead.

Layne Johnson was called on to come in in relief in the bottom of the sixth.  He retired the first two that he faced but then a walk and a single had runners on the corners.  Dexter then pulled off a fake steal attempt of second base where the runner got caught in a run down on purpose allowing the the runner at third to score the tying run.

The seventh inning belonged to the Eagles, however, as they would send nine batters to the plate and score six runs on four hits and two Bearcat errors to come away with the 16-10 win.

Johnson was able to work around a walk and an error in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.  He improved his record to 2-0 with win.  Oran improved to 7-3.

At the plate Trankler was 3-4 with four rbi.  Reischman was also 3-4, he added three runs batted in.  The two were named co-stars of the game.  Priggel also added three hits in four at bats.  He drove in two.  Heuring and Sauceda each added two hits as the Eagles pounded three Dexter hurlers for 17 hits.

On the mound, Trankler went five innings, allowing seven hits, nine runs, six of which were earned.  He struck out seven and walked 5. Johnson worked the last two giving up 1 hit and 1 run.   He fanned two and gave up two free passes.

In the second game, Trankler ripped the first pitch he saw leading off the game in an apparent home run that easily cleared the left center field fence.  But an appeal by the Shawnee Redskins led to the base umpire ruling that Trankler missed first base and was called out.

Then, when Shawnee had the first four batters reach base off Johnson and two unearned runs scored things did not look good for Oran.

But the Eagles' bats came alive as they batted around in the second and third innings and broke the game wide open.  Seven runs scored in each of those frames giving them a 14-2 lead after three.

In the second, Oran had three doubles, two singles, a hit batsman and a catcher's interference to plate seven.  In the third it was a double, four singles and three walks.  All seven scored after two outs were recorded.

The Redskins were able to score three runs in the fourth to cut the margin back to single digits and keep their chances alive and force the game to continue the full seven innings.

The Eagles pushed across two unearned runs in seventh inning for the final of 16-5.

Johnson picked up the win, his second of the day.  He went five innings giving up eight hits, five runs, only three earned. he walked one while striking out four.  Reischman made his varsity debut on the mound throwing two shut out innings. He allowed two hits, struck out one and walked none.

The two freshman pitchers were named co-stars of the game.

Offensively,  Priggel had four hits and two rbi,  Sauceda had three hits and also had two runs driven in. Trankler and Reischman and Blake Overfield each drove in three runs.  Trankler had two hits, while Reischman and Overfield had one each.
