JHGB suffer 1st losses

The Oran Junior High School girls basketball teams came back from Charleston empty handed last night after both squads suffered 5 point conference losses.

The 7th grade Eagles had a hard time scoring as they fell 15-10.  Mallory Lowes netted 5, including a 3 point basket in the first quarter.  Hope Woodfin added 3, while Alyssa Spane chipped in 2.

Oran trailed 4-3 after 1 and 6-5 at the half as neither team had much success at putting the ball through the hoop.

The Eagles were down 10-8 after the third.

Oran was only 1-8 from the free throw line.

The Eagles dropped to 1-1 in conference and overall.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "We never could get on track in the scoring column as we struggled to reach double digits. We had plenty of open looks but could not knock them down. Our defense was excellent but we struggled to keep a much taller Charleston team off the boards."

The 8th grade team led their game 10-9 after the first quarter of the night-cap, but trailed 22-16 at half-time.  The deficit grew to 33-20 after the third quarter before Heather Gosche almost single handedly brought her squad back into contention.

Gosche scored 11 of her team-high 18 points in the final six minutes as Oran made a game of it before losing 40-35.  Taylor Lowes scored 10 for the Eagles who fell to 1-1 and 2-1, respectively.

According to Coach Evans, "The 8th grade got off to a fast start but struggled to make shots in the middle 2 quarters. We got down by 17 in the 3rd before clawing back to a 3 point deficit numerous times before falling by 5."

Once again free-throw shooting was a bugaboo as they hit only 7-19.

Both teams will try to get back onto the win column on Thursday when they host conference foe East Prairie at 6 pm.
