Volleyball Wins One and Loses One at Home

The Oran High School volleyball teams managed a split with the visiting Sikeston Bulldogs last night as the jv was able to win the last two in a three set victory, while the varsity fell in three.

In the opener, the younger team lost the initial set 15-25 before coming back to claim the next two 25-20 and 25-19.

The junior varsity improved to 2-2 in conference play and 4-5 overall with the win over the Class 4 Sikeston squad.

Head Coach Monica Collier had this to say about the first match.  The “junior varsity played very well tonight.  They didn’t come out as fired up as they could, and they lost the first set.  But for the rest of the game, they really came together as a team, hustled, and communicated well.  They won the next two sets to win the game.  They are beginning to realize that they are a good team, and they can win ball games."

In the final game of the night, the Bulldogs were able to end the Eagles three match winning streak.  Oran fell 18-25, 25-20 and 17-25.

Jessie Long had 6 aces and 4 kills for the Eagles, now 2-2 and 6-8.  Kenzie Graviett had 2 aces and 3 kills.  Megan Tenkhoff added a pair of aces, while Cheyanne Dobbs and Kaitlyn Wittu had a kill apiece.

Coach Collier said, "Varsity overall did not play at their potential.  They struggle with coming out in the first set ready to play hard.  They did much better the 2nd set, especially around the middle of the set.  They began to believe that they could win that set, and they did.  Sikeston came out the 3rd set pumped up and ready to play.  Their hitters were able to get many sets, and they took advantage of them, and we just couldn’t stop it.  We played well, and there were moments that we played great.  We are now going to focus on our next game, Thursday, at Risco.”

Game time against the Tigers is 6 pm.
