Volleyball Splits at NMCC

The Oran High School volleyball team traveled to New Madrid Thursday evening and garnered a split.

The junior varsity picked up their second victory in a row while the varsity lost a three set heart breaker.

The nightcap started out with the Eagles picking up a hard-fought 26-24 win. NMCC won set two 25-17 before claiming the third and deciding set 25-23.

The varsity, now 1-4, was led by Brianna Stause with 6 kills and 4 blocks.

Kaitlyn Wittu had 3 aces and McKenzie Belt also had an ace.

Kenzie Graviett had 4 kills. Cheyanne Dobbs and Wittu each had 2 kills while Megan Tenkhoff contributed with a kill.

The junior varsity (2-3) won their match in three sets by scores of 25-21, 14-25 and 25-13

Coach Monica Collier had this to say about the night's action.

The "jv continued their winning streak against New Madrid. They won the first set, lost the second, but came back determined to win the third set and that's exactly what they did. I am also very proud of [the] varsity. They looked like a different team tonight: focused, determined, and scrappy. They are realizing that even with two strong players down that we still have eight strong. They are beginning to believe in themselves and I believe we are going to win the next one. They played with heart tonight and did not quit! Way to go girls!"

The varsity will be in action this weekend as they compete in the Dig for Life Classic in Cape Girardeau.

Oran has two games this evening starting at 4:30 when they take on the Gideon Bulldogs and then at 7:50 they will play the Zalma Bulldogs. Both contests take place in the Show Me Center.

Tomorrow, The Eagles will finish pool play at 9:40 am when they play the Seckman Jaguars.

Based upon pool play results they will be placed in one of three tournament brackets.
