The Oran High School girls basketball team hadn't played a game for 2 and a half weeks and it showed early, but the rust wasn't enough to cause major problems as the number 2 seed Eagles pounded the number 7 seeded Delta Bobcats 66-25 in the opening round of the 2016 Delta New Year Tournament.
Oran, despite the long layoff, jumped out to a 14-2 first quarter lead and they erased all doubt with a 38-12 half time bulge.
The Eagles expanded that lead to 30 after 3 at 53-23. The entire fourth quarter was played with the mercy-rule running-clock and Oran won by 41.
Leah Cauble once again was the game's top scorer, knocking down 24 with one three-point field goal and 11 of 15 from the line. Ashlyn McIntosh also hit for double figures with 15 and just missed a double-double by grabbing 9 boards.
Brianna Stause had 9 point, with one trey. Tatum May scored 6. Jessie Long and Claire Ramsey each added 5. Long had a team-high 5 steals. Hannah Scherer and Erin Schlitt both added a single tally.
Shiloh Kirn, Madison Ramsey and Katelyn Streeter all logged minutes but did not score.
After the game, Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "I thought we played like a team that had not played in 18 days. We missed a ton of easy shots but give Delta credit they made us work for everything. We did shoot free throws well so that's a positive."
From the line, the Eagles were 22 of 30 for 73.3%. From the field, inside the arc, they were 19-53 for 35.8% and from beyond 22.2% on 2 of 9 shooting.
Oran improved to 8-0 on the season and will take on Scott County Central tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 8:30. Scott County the 3 seed advanced by beating the 6th seed Puxico Indians tonght by a final of 60-36. Earlier this season, the Eagle defeated the Bravettes, 70-35.
