Eagles soar to tournament title

For the second time this season the Oran High School varsity girls basketball team claimed a championship in Chaffee.  This time it was the 2016 Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament with a dominate 74-40 trouncing of the Scott County Central Bravettes.

Last night Oran scored early and often racing out to a 22-2 lead and at the end of the quarter led 22-5.  By half-time it 38-15.

The Eagles pushed the advantage to 30 in the third before a Bravette rally cut the lead to 56-32 heading into the final frame.

Oran outscored Scott Central 18-8 and the game was played with a running clock for most of the final 8 minutes.

Leah Cauble scored 19 to lead the Eagles, she also dished out 6 assists.  Jessie Long had 18 points while Ashlyn McIntosh added 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

Tatum May and Claire Ramsey each added 8.  Brianna Stause, despite playing in obvious pain, contributed 4 points and 4 steals.  Hannah Scherer chipped in with 2 points.

Coach Ethan Evans told the blog this morning, "I thought it was the best all around effort that we have had all year. Everyone contributed both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Any time you play a good team 3 times it is tough to beat them, but I thought we executed our game plan well."

This is the first time that the Oran varsity girls have ever won the conference tournament.

The Eagles, now 12-1, will host Saxony Lutheran on Monday.  Saxony is the only team to defeat Oran this season.  The junior varsity will tip-off at 6 pm.
