The Oran High School varsity girls basketball team raced past the Charleston Blue Jays last night by a final of 78-36 to advance to this evenings' championship game against number 2 seed Scott County Central at 7:45 of the Scott-Mississippi conference tournament at Chaffee.
The Eagles jumped out to a 20-7 first quarter lead. They had 5 players score during the first eight minutes. Jessie Long had 6, Tatum May and Ashlyn McIntosh had 4 and Leah Cauble and Brianna Stause each added 3.
Charleston, the 3 seed, tried to mount a comeback in the second period as they managed to cut the deficit to 8 on two occasions but the lead was 12 at the half, 35-23.
Oran, seeded 1st, took compete control of the contest after the break by out-scoring the Jays 29-4 during the third stanza, leading 64-27 into the final frame.
A mercy-rule clock and a 14-9 fourth for the Eagles provided the 42 point margin of victory.
After the game, Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "I was pleased with the adjustments the girls made after halftime to the physicality of the game. Anytime you play Charleston you know it's going to be rough. In the 3rd quarter we became the aggressors and it paid dividends."
Leah Cauble led all scorers with 25. She was 3-4 from beyond the arc and a perfect 8-8 from the line. She dished out 9 assists and had 5 steals. Jessie Long scored 18. Tatum May had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Claire Ramsey came off the bench and dropped in 9, Ashlyn McIntosh had 8, Brianna Stause scored 6 on two treys before leaving in the third quarter with an injury. Hannah Scherer chipped in 2 points. Every Eagle that dressed, scored.
Oran was 5 of 11 from beyond the arc for 45.5%, 24 of 57 from inside for 42.1%. From the line, they hit 71.4% on 15 of 21 shooting.
The Eagles are now 11-1 advancing into tonight's game with the Bravettes. These two teams have met twice the year with Oran winning both contests, 70-35 and 70-49, respectively.
