Eagles sweep Bobcats

The Oran High School girls basketball teams picked up two home conference wins last night against the Delta Bobcats.  The varsity cruised 71-34 while the junior varsity came back for a 45-40 victory.

The night cap was over just a couple of minutes into the game.  The Eagles jumped out 25-4 after the first period thanks, in part, to Leah Cauble, who scored 17 of her game-high 39 points during the first eight minutes.

It was more of the same in the second as Oran expanded the score to 44-8.

After the half-time intermission, the Eagles called off the press and fell back into a 1-3-1 zone.  Delta out-scored Oran in the third, 19-18.  The Eagles utilized the mercy-rule clock during the fourth to claim the 37 point rout.

Head coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "Our effort in the 1st half was outstanding especially on the defensive side of the ball with the press. We tried some new defenses in the 2nd half and we weren't nearly as aggressive."

Included in those 39 points, Cauble hit 2 from beyond the arc and 11 of 12 from the stripe.  Ashlyn McIntosh reached double-figures with 10. She had a triple.

Brianna Stause hit for 8 and also hit two from long range.  Shiloh Kirn chipped in 6, including a trey. Jessie Long and Tatum May both added four.  Long led the team with 10 rebounds and May had 4 assists and 6 steals.

Mackenzie Graviett, Claire Ramsey and Hannah Scherer all played but did not score.

Oran was 19-54 for 35% from inside the arc and also 35% from beyond (6-17). From the charity stripe they were 15-24 for 63%.

The varsity is now 2-0 in conference and 13-2 overall.

They will be back in action on Saturday when they take the Twin Rivers Royals at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Junior Varsity

In the evening's first game, the Eagles were taking on the team that won last week's conference tournament.

Oran jumped out 8-2 with four minutes gone before a Bobcat time-out.  Delta out-scored the Eagles 7-0 the last three minutes to take a 9-8 lead after one.

The Bobcats expanded that lead to 23-17 at the intermission.

Oran scored the first 7 points of the third and at the 2:39 mark had regained the lead, 24-23.   At the end of the third the Eagles led by 3, 29-26.

At the 2:54 mark of the fourth the jv was was up by 6, 39-33, but just one minute later, after Delta slapped on the press, the game was tied at 39 all.  Oran won the last 1:52 6-1 to claim a 5 point win.

Coach Evans said, "I was pleased with the way the girls played against one of the better jv teams in our conference. The girls were aggressive with the ball and really got after it on defense."

MacKenzie Graviett led the way with 14 points. Claire Ramsey had 13, she hit one from beyond the arc.  Katelyn Streeter added 12, 6 in the fourth including 4 for 4 from the line.

Madison Ramsey added 6.

Madison Graviett and Megan Henson played but did not score.

The Eagles were 12-18 from the line for 66%, including 8 of 13 in the fourth.

The jv also improved to 2-0 in Scott-Miss play and 4-3 overall.

The younger team will take the court next Monday at Meadow Heights, along with the varsity, for a 6 pm tip-off with the Panthers.
