Eagles deal 'Devils dual defeats

Last night, Oran's Junior Beta Club hosted a fundraising chili supper.  As far as the visitors were concerned it may just as well been "green pea soup" they were serving, as the Oran High School boys basketball teams played "Exorcist" by defeating the Red Devils 65-39 in the varsity contest, while the jv prevailed 61-36.

During the feature game, the older Eagles scored first, but then a turn over and a defensive lapse gave Chaffee a 5-2 lead.  Head Coach Joe Shoemaker was not happy and burned a time out with 4:43 left in the first.

What ever was said worked, as a reverse lay up by Layne Johnson, followed by a three-point basket by Max Priggel and nice base-line drive by Preston Hahn gave the Eagles 9-5 lead 2 minutes later and Chaffee called time.  Oran outscored the Devils 9-4 the rest of the quarter to lead 18-9 after one.

The second quarter saw the Eagle lead hover around ten until near the end of the frame when a late run pushed the lead to 17 at 38-21.

Oran was up 52-33 after the 3rd period.

Priggel opened the fourth by scoring 8 straight points in the first 1:20 and the Eagles had an insurmountable 60-33 lead.

Priggel scored 21 on the night, including 4 from beyond the arc.  Johnson hit for 14 while Jacob Shoemaker had 13.  Shoemaker made 2 treys.

Blake Schlitt score 6, Garrison Mangels added 5.  Hahn, Luke Barnes and Drew Reischman each chipped in 2 apiece.

Wyatt Kinney played but did not score.

The Eagles were 7 of 12 from the line for 58%.

They improved to 13-9 and 4-2 in conference play.

Junior Varsity

In the opener, Oran trailed 10-7 near the end of the first quarter.  Drew Reischman hit an "and one" to tie the game at 10.  From that point on it was all Eagles as Oran competed a 20-4 run into the intermission and led 27-14.

The lead was even bigger after a 21-10 third quarter as the Eagles cruised to a 25 point margin of victory.

Standing out during the middle quarters, was the rebounding work of Reischman and Denver Elfrink, as they completely controlled the boards.

Reischman led all scorers with 19, despite only playing in 3 quarters.

Elfrink, Ben Fox and Jon (Downtown) Shipley each added 9. Shipley hit 1 from "downtown".  Calen Read scored 6, Joey Phillips had 4.  Avery Mitchem chipped in 3 while William Kluesner hit a basket for his 2 points.

Bradley Brooks played but did not score.

The jv was 12 of 20 at the charity stripe for 60%.

They improved to 6-9 and 3-2, respectively.

The next game is Friday at Bell City.  The varsity-only contest will begin at 6 pm.
