The outlook coming into this season for the Oran High School boys basketball team was a big question mark. The Eagles lost 3 all-district seniors that provided the bulk of the scoring and rebounding from a team that finished 19-9. How would they plug the gap? They would try with youth.
Layne Johnson, a sophomore who split time between jv and varsity the year before, and Cole Priggel another sophomore moved into the starting line up. As did, freshman Jacob Shomaker. These three under classmen along with junior Max Priggel and senior Garrison Mangels made up the starting line up for the bulk of the season. Senior Preston Hahn stepped in when Cole Priggel suffered through a foot injury for most of the second half of the schedule.
Oran finished with a 15-14 despite the young line-up and lost 5 of those games by 3 points or less.
The Eagles won the consolation trophy of the Christmas tournament for the second straight year.
Max Priggel was named to the seMissourian Christmas All-Tournament Team.
He and Shoemaker were named to the All-District Team.
Priggel led the team in scoring with 16.3 ppg and free throw percentage hitting at a clip of 72% (70-103). He also had 60 steals. Shoemaker hit a team high 55 treys. Johnson had 79 assists (2.7 per game) and 219 rebounds (7.6 rpg) and a total of 26 blocks to lead in those categories.
As a team they scored 62 ppg and allowed 53. They hit 51% from inside the arc and 34% from beyond. From the charity stripe they were good on 65% of their attempts.
Head Coach Joe Shoemaker told the blog, "We will really miss our seniors and their leadership. We have several players returning next year and hopefully they will work on their weaknesses in the off season. I also hope that we are able to go to some team camps with everyone in attendance so we can develop as a team during the summer months. I think next years team has some potential IF they put in the time during the off season. In order to beat the best you have to outwork them! Lastly I would like to think the players, parents and community for their support."
Oran will graduate 3 seniors from a team that has finished as district runner-ups for three straight seasons; Preston Hahn, Garrison Mangels and Blake Schlitt.
