Looking back: HSGB

It was another very successful season for the Oran High School girls basketball team.

Just to list some of the accomplishments:

1.  Red Devil Invitational champs for the 1st time
2.  Delta New Year Tournament runner-ups
3.  Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament champs for the first time
4.  Won the conference regular season with a perfect 7-0 record
5.  District Champs for the 3rd year in a row
6.  Most wins in a season with 23

The campaign started with 7 straight wins, including their first ever Chaffee tournament championship over the host team.  The first loss occurred on January 7th in the final game of the Delta New Year tourney to class 3 power Saxony Lutheran, a team that has advanced to the final-four.

Next, they went on to coast through the conference tournament also held at Chaffee, winning their three games by an average margin of 46 points.

The Eagles finished the rest of the regular season 9-2 for a 21-3 record.  The only losses were in a rematch with Saxony and to another class 3 district winner, Twin Rivers.

The Class 1 District 2 tournament was held at Richland and Oran easily claimed their third straight title.  They won game one by 80 and the final by 53.

Once again, however, the season ended in the sectional round at Bloomfield as the Eagles lost to Naylor, a final-four team, by 19.  The year before, Naylor had ended the Eagles season by 28 and Naylor finished 2nd in the state.

Leah Cauble, Jessie Long and Brianna Stause were named to the Red Devil Invitational all tournament team.

Tatum May, Ashlyn McIntosh, Cauble , Long and Stause were named to the All-District tournament team.

More honors will be announced later.

Leading Oran statistically:

Cauble scored a total of 689 points for 25.5 ppg.  She also averaged 4.9 assists (139) and was 128 of 163 from the free throw line for 78.5%.  She was also credited for 75 steals.

Stause led the team with 54 made treys.  She hit 28.7% of her 188 attempts.

Long had a total of 208 rebounds to average 7.7 boards a game. McIntosh had the most offensive rebounds with a total of 88.

May led the team with 14 blocked shots.

As a team, the Eagles hit 45.4% from inside the arc, 28.5% from beyond the arc and 61% from the line.

They averaged 66.2 points per game while allowing only 34.8.

Head Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "Overall we had a great season, it just didn’t end the way we wanted it to. Anytime you can set the school record for wins and post a 23-4 mark overall it’s a good year. We will miss our five seniors but I am looking forward to what we have coming back. Our JV had a successful season and those girls will be pushing for time. We will also have some freshmen that will come in and challenge for playing time as well. The future is bright and I feel very fortunate to be the coach of the Oran High School Lady Eagles."

Those five seniors are Shiloh Kirn, Tatum May, Ashlyn McIntosh, Hannah Scherer and Erin Schlitt.
