Baseball blasts BlueJays

The Oran High School baseball team picked up their 4th straight win yesterday with a 12-2 six inning mercy-rule victory over the visiting Charleston BlueJays.  The Eagles blistered two BlueJay hurlers for 14 hits, 8 of which were of the extra-base variety, to improve to 7-6 over all and 3-2 in the Scott-Miss.

Charleston took and early lead.

With two outs in the first, a walk and a hit batter was followed by passed ball and an excuse me single back up the middle, on 1-2 count, which gave the visitors an early 2-0 lead.  But Clay Sauceda and Preston Hahn then teamed up for a caught stealing to end the threat.

In the bottom of the first, Drew Reischman doubled and advanced to the third when the ball was mishandled in the out field and then scored on Hahn's ground out to short to cut the deficit to one.

Oran would take control in the third when they sent 11 to plate and scored 6.

Once again it was Reischman who started things off with a hit, this time a single.  Cole Priggel would drive him home with a triple. Priggel scored on Hahn's single.  One out later Hahn crossed the plate on a double by Blake Overfield.  Layne Johnson would beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt and then advance to second on an errant throw as Overfield scored.  Tanner McVay would cap the inning with his second home run of the season and the Eagles were up 7-2 after three.

Oran tacked on 3 more in the fourth.

Overfield reached on a fielder's choice with 2 outs, went to second on Johnson's single.  The bases were loaded after McVay walked.  Overfield and Johnson scored on Austin Eftink's single and then after a pitching change.  Jacob Shoemaker loaded the bases with a walk.  Reischman walked to force in the 10th run of the game.

The Eagles closed out the game in the sixth.  Eftink led off with a double, his third hit of the day, but was retired when he tried to advance to third on a ground ball to the shortstop and was tagged out sliding in at the base, allowing Shoemaker to reach on a fielder's choice.

That brought Reischman to the plate.

Reischman, who had started rallies in the first and third inning, would end the one in the sixth he by launching a laser line drive over the left center fence to give Oran the margin necessary for a mercy-rule victory.

On the mound, Reischman went the distance, picking up his first win of the season and is now 1-0 with a save.  He allowed 2 runs, only 1 earned, on 5 hits.  He walked 2, hit 2 and struck out 7.

At the plate, he was 3-4 with a double, home run, his second of the season, and 3 RBI, and he reached on a walk and stole a base.  Eftink also had 3 hits in 4 trips including 2 doubles and 2 RBI.  McVay was 2-3 with a dinger and 2 driven in.

Johnson was 2-4 with an RBI, Hahn was 1-4 with 2 runs driven in.

The Eagles will be back at it today when they travel to Saxony Lutheran.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:30.
