Baseball loses two at ND Showcase

The Oran High School baseball team dropped two games yesterday at the 5th annual Notre Dame Showcase. They lost 6-0 to the Triad Knights and 5-2 to the host Notre Dame Bulldogs.

Game 1:

The Knight scored in top of the first.  The lead off man was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved the third on a ground out.  A single into shallow left had runners on 1st and 3rd with one out.  Triad was able to execute the double steal with two down to score the only run they would need.

They added two more in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd.  The final tally crossed the plate in the 5th against Layne Johnson, who went the distance.  He fell to 3-4 with the loss.  He allowed 6 runs, all earned, on 10 hits.  He walked 2, hit 2 and struck out 7.

The Eagles only managed 3 hits; singles by Preston Hahn, Clay Sauceda and Blake Overfield.

Game 2:

Notre Dame jumped on top 1-0 in the home half of the first by getting a 2 out single, a stolen base, a passed ball and another single against starter Drew Reischman.

The Eagles tied it in the 3rd when designated hitter Drew Mitchem singled in his first action of the year, on the first pitch that he saw.  He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Eftink and to third on a single by Reischman.  An RBI ground out by Hahn would plate the run.

The Bulldogs would take the lead in the bottom half with two unearned runs.  A lead off single would score when the next batter would single and advance to third on an error.  He scored on a wild pitch.

A lead-off walk in the fourth would score for Notre Dame after two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly.

Another unearned run crossed for the Bulldogs in the 5th.  A lead off error, a single and a throwing error made the score 5-1 heading into the 6th.

Oran made some noise in their half of the 6th inning.  With two outs, Hahn reached on an infield error.  Consecutive singles by Sauceda, Overfield and Johnson drove in 1 but the Eagles stranded the bases loaded.  The went down 1-2-3 in the 7th.

Reischman was charged with loss, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 5 runs, only 1 earned, on 6 hits.  He walked 5, hit 2 and gave up 6 hits.  Hahn went the final 2/3 striking out 1.

The Eagles dropped back to .500, at 8-8, and will host district opponent Leopold on Wednesday at 4:30.
