Softball splits on Saturday

The Oran High School softball team participated in the Scott City Softball fest on Saturday.  The Eagles won 2 and lost 2 as they finished fourth overall out of 8 teams.

Game 1:

Oran faced the Malden GreenWave in the opener at 8 am.  The Eagles scored a run in the first and never trailed as they won 4-2.  Leah Cauble tripled with one out and then scored when Tatum May grounded out to short.  The first three batters in the Oran half of the second also scored as Maddie Graviett singled, Brianna Stause reached on an error and Kenzie Graviett drove in Maddie with a single.  Stause scored on an RBI ground out by Sydney Kern and Kenzie crossed the plate on a ground ball error hit by Claire Ramsey.

Tatum May went the distance in the circle and had a shut out until the 6th inning when the first two batters singled and both scored. The game was ended due to the time limit.

May allowed 5 hits through the 6 innings and only 1 earned run.  She walked 1 and struck out 7 against a Greenwave team that came into the event with a 12-1 record.  May improved her record to 3-3 with the win as the Eagles improved to 7-4.

Oran managed only 3 hit but were helped by 6 Malden errors, 2 walks and a hit batter.

Game 2:

The next pool play contest had the Eagles against the 9-3 Bismarck Indians.  Oran won 10-0 in a 5 inning mercy rule victory.

The Eagles scored 2 in the first, four in both the second and third innings and Hannah Scherer tossed the one-hit shut out to pick up her first decision of the year.

Cauble was 3-3 with 4 RBI, Kern was also 3-3 with 2 driven in.

Scherer walked 3 and struck out 3, while allowing only a lead-off single in the first for the only Bismarck hit.

Game 3:

The final pool play opponent was two-time defending state champion Kennett (13-4).  The Indians and the Eagles had met up on April 5th with Kennett claiming an 11-5 win in a game played at Oran.  This time, the Indians would prevail again, the final was 5-3 in a game shortened to 5 1/2 innings due to the time limit.  The Eagles out hit Kennett 6-3 but 3 Oran errors contributed to 5 unearned runs and saddled the Eagles with the loss.

Oran scored 2 in the second.  Jessie Long led of with a single and moved to second on Scherer's one out single.  Both runners moved up a base when Kenzie Graviett grounded out and then both scored on Stause's double.

The lead was short lived however, as Kennett would score 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the second.  A one out single was followed by double and an error to score one.  Then with two outs and the bases loaded a single drove in two more.

The Indians added another in the third after a lead off error came around to score.

A lead off walk led to the the fifth Kennett run in the fourth.  A wild pitch and a passed ball turned into the final unearned run.

The Eagles would try to rally in the sixth.  May doubled with one out and scored when Long singled her home and advanced to second on the throw.  She would be stranded there, however.

Kenzie Graviett took the loss, going 5 innings.  She gave up only 3 hits and 5 runs (0 earned).  She walked 2 and struck out 4 and she hit a batter.  Kenzie fell to 4-2 with the loss.

Long and Scherer both had two hits apiece.  Long had an RBI to go along with the 2 driven in by Stause.

Game 4:

The final game of the day was the "bracket" game as Oran, who had place 2nd in their pool would face West County Bulldogs, who had entered the event with a 13-0 record.

Once again, the Eagles jumped on top.  Kern would draw a four pitch walk to start the game.  One out later, Tatum May homered and Oran led 2-0.

A seven run second gave West County the lead and they went on to claim a 5 inning mercy rule victory 12-2.  The big blow was a grand slam home run.

The Eagles had at least two base runners on during each at bat but couldn't get the hit when they needed it.

The Bulldogs scored 2 more in the third with a walk and a triple and an error.  They picked up the final runs in the fifth with a walk, three singles and a ground out.

May got the start and went the first 2 1/3 and picked up the loss falling to 3-4 on the season.  She was charged with 9 runs, 7 earned, on 9 hits.  She walked 3 and struck out none.  Kenzie went the final 2 innings giving up 3 runs, all earned, on 5 hits.  She walked 2 and struck out 1.

Oran had only 4 hits on the day.  Other than May's home run, Stause, Kenzie and Abbie Madigan each had singles.

According to Assistant coach Susan Dirnberger, "Overall we had a good day. The first two games we came out and scored early and did not let down. The Kennett game could have been a winner if we hadn't dropped fly balls and made errors in the outfield."

"The team needs to have confidence that we can play with the best and still come out ahead. The team seems to let down when we have to come from behind. But  a win is not determined until the final out is made."

The Eagles are currently 8-6 and will be back in action on Thursday when they host Scott County Central at 4:30 pm.
