Eagles fall on the road.

The Oran High School baseball team took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning yesterday at Portageville, but the Bulldogs scored 3 and held the Eagles the rest of the way and Oran lost 4-3.

The Eagles plated 2 in the first as Drew Reischman walked and Cole Priggel reached on an error.  Two outs later Blake Overfield drove in both with a double into the left-center field gap.

Portageville would cut the lead in half in the second.  A lead off double and an error followed by a sacrifice fly made it 2-1.

That's the way it stood until the Oran 5th.

Jacob Shoemaker walked to start the frame and promptly stole second.  Reischman hit an RBI double to left after a pitching change.  The Eagles picked up a one out walk but stranded both runners.

Layne Johnson, who got the start, had work out of tight spots all five innings he pitched.  Portageville had the lead off man on in every inning.  In the 3rd a two base error had him under the gun but he got a fly out, ground out and a strike out.

In the fourth, back to back singles were followed by back to back strike outs and a force out.

There would be no escape in the bottom of the fifth as the first 3 Bulldogs batter reached base on 2 singles sandwiched around a walk that scored one.  After a called third strike, the next batter hit a sinking line drive that was misplayed and drove in two more.

The Eagles trailed 4-3 heading into the seventh.  After the first two were retired, Preston Hahn, who had pitched a scoreless sixth in relief, tripled to right, putting the tying run 90 feet away.  A hard hit line drive hit to right was caught though and the threat and the game was ended.

Johnson went 5 allowing all 4 runs, but only 1 was earned, on 6 hits.  He struck out 7 and walked 3.  He was saddled with the tough luck loss, falling to 1-3.

Hahn, went 1 inning, striking out 1 and walking 1.

Tanner McVay was 2 for 3 for Oran who fell to 3-6.

They will be back in action today when they host the Woodland Cardinals at 4:30.
