Eagles fall to Rams

The Oran High School boys baseball team played it's first home game yesterday, losing to the Scott City Rams by a final score of 6-1.

Layne Johnson got the start on the mound for the Eagles.

Johnson did a Houdini act in the top of the first.  After a lead off double was followed by consecutive walks.  Scott City had the bases loaded with no one out and was poised to blow the game open early. Johnson responded, however, with two called third strikes and a fly out to left field to wiggle out of the jam.

In the second, he worked around a one out walk and the game was scoreless heading into the third.

During the Ram half of the third they used a one out walk and a single to put runners at 1st and 3rd with only one down.  An infield out and another single drove in 2 and Oran trailed.

The Rams had a base running blunder in the fourth, a one out single was followed by a double.  The lead runner rounded third base too far and was tagged out by catcher Clay Sauceda following a run down.

The Eagles threatened in the fourth but came up empty.  Drew Reischman singled with 1 out and advanced to third on an infield error on a ball hit by Sauceda, but Scott City hurler Braden Cox struck out the next two to end the rally.

The Rams did score another run in the 5th to make it 3-0 after back to back doubles to start the inning, then an infield single had runners on at 1st and 2nd with no one out.  Rieschman fielded a ground ball at short, tossed to Preston Hahn covering second who quickly fired to Austin Eftink at first for a 6-4-3 double play.  A fly ball to Jacob Shoemaker in right, who got the start due to an injury to Denver Elfrink, ended the inning keeping the margin 3 runs.

Reischman relieved Johnson on the mound in the 6th and Scott City scored three more runs, only one of which was earned.

The Rams scored all three of those runs after two were out.  A walk started the inning and after a sac bunt and an intentional walk, the second out was recorded on a called third strike.  A single drove in the first run but 3 Eagle errors and a balk led to 2 more runs crossing the plate.  The inning came to an end after a snazzy diving stop up the middle on a ground ball by Cole Priggel, who had moved to short stop when Reischman had become the pitcher and Johnson went to center.  Priggel was able to toss the ball from a prone position to Hahn who was covering the bag for a force out.

Scott City went to it's bullpen  and Oran was able to get on the board in their half of the sixth after a lead off four pitch walk to Reischman, Blake Overfield singled, Tanner McVay reached on an error, Johnson hit into a fielder's choice driving in Reischman from third.

Overfield came in to pitch the 7th.  He walked the first batter he faced, but got the next to fly out to Johnson on a nice running catch in the alley in left-center.  The next batter hit a ground ball up the middle that was snagged by Reischman, who had moved back to the short stop position.  He stepped on the bag and fired to first for the second double play turned by the Eagles on the day.

Oran threatened in the bottom of the 7th after Shoemaker worked a lead off walk.  The next two were retired before Reischman hit a shot to the fence in left field moving Shoemaker to third, but the next batter was retired to end the game.

Johnson picked up the loss and is now 1-2 on the season.  He went 5 innings, gave up 3 runs, all earned, on 8 hits.  He walked 4 and struck out 3.  Reischman went 1 inning, giving up 3 runs, only 1 earned, on 1 hit.  He had 2 walks, 1 intentional and 1 strike out.  Overfield also went an inning allowing only 1 walk.

At the plate both Johnson and Reischman went 2-3.  Johnson had an RBI, and Reischman scored the run.  Overfield had the only other Eagle hit.

Oran falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.

They will be back at it today at 4:30 when the host another conference opponent, the East Prairie Eagles.

The start of yesterday's contest was delayed by just under forty minutes due to the afternoon rains that came through the area.
