Softball drops home opener

The Oran High School girls softball team dropped yesterday's game to  two-time spring softball state champion Kennett 11-5.  The Eagles fell to 0-2 while the Lady Indians improved to 6-1.

Kennett scored first by getting their lead-off batter on with an infield single.  Two outs later, back-to-back doubles pushed 2 runs across and Oran would trail the rest of the way.

In the bottom of the first the Eagles would cut the margin, however.

Sydney Kern led off with an infield single of her own.  She scored on a double by Jessie Long.  A double by Claire Ramsey had runners on at second and third with only one out, but the next two batters were retired.

The Indians would plate 3 in the second.  Once again the damage came with two-outs.    The first two were retired but then a single sandwiched between a pair of walks followed by a double would push across the runs.

After that, neither team would score until the 5th inning.

In the top half, Kennett scored an unearned run after a lead-off double and then a one-out error.

Oran came back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning when they did a little two-out damage of their own.  Jessie Long kept the frame alive with her four-pitch, two-out walk and then a first-pitch swinging Ramsey deposited the ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run.  Tatum May then doubled but was stranded.

The Eagles had cut the lead to 6-3 heading into the sixth.

A four-run out burst by the Indians all but sealed Oran's fate.  The Eagles gave up a couple of hits a walk and two errors as only two of the runs were earned.

Oran gave up another unearned run in the 7th as they committed  two more errors.

It was 11-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th but the Eagles did not give up.  Kern picked up her third hit of the day leading off.  Two outs later Ramsey went yard for the second time in the game cutting the lead to 9-5.  May singled but the next batter was retired to end the game.

May (0-2) went 6 innings in the circle.  She allowed 10 runs, 7 earned on 9 hits.  She struck out 3 and walked 3.  Kenzie Graviett worked the 7th allowing 1 unearned run.

Ramsey went 3-4, collecting a double and 2 home runs and 4 RBI.  Kern was also 3-4 and scored twice.  May was 2-4 with a double

Oran out-hit Kennett 10-9 but committed 5 errors to only 1 by the visitors.

Assistant Coach Susan Dirnberger said, "Overall, a good game. We dropped pop flies that should have been caught and we bobbled the ball a few too many times. We have some little things that we need to work on."

"After not having played a game in two weeks we were able to stay with a team that is one of the top in the state. I see us only improving as we play more games."

"The highlights included the 2 home runs by Claire Ramsey and a great catch by Brianna Stause and a line drive catch by Sydney Kern to turn a double play by throwing to first to double off the runner," she added.

The Eagles will be back in action this afternoon at 4:30 when they host an old fall-ball rival, Naylor.
