Baseball ends losing streak

The Oran High School baseball team broke it's three-game skid yesterday with an 11-0 5 inning rout at Oak Ridge.  The Eagles improved to 2-3 while the Blue Jays fell to 2-5.

Oran score in every inning, plating 4 in both the 2nd and 4th frames and 1 each in the other 3.

Cole Priggel started things with a base on balls.  On the first pitch to Preston Hahn, Priggel stole second and an errant throw by the catcher allowed him to advance to third. Hahn was hit by a pitch. Drew Reischman drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Eagles put up four in the second.  Layne Johnson singled to center with one-out, that was followed by an Austin Eftink walk.  Denver Elfrink then hit an infield single to load the bases.  Priggel hit a ground ball to the shortstop, his throw to second sailed wide and two runs scored.  After Priggel stole second, Hahn hit a shot into the gap in left-center driving in two more.  Hahn tried to stretch it into a triple and was thrown out at third.

In the home half of the second, Hahn, who got the start on the mound, worked around two errors and a walk to get out unscathed.

The third inning saw 5 straight reach base for Oran.  Clay Sauceda was hit by a pitch, Jacob Shoemaker came in as a courtesy runner and promptly stole second.  Blake Overfield reached on a fielders choice after hitting a ground ball to the shortstop and Shoemaker was tagged out trying to advance.  Overfield moved to third after an wild pick off throw from the pitcher.   He came home on Tanner McVay's RBI double.  Johnson hit a single that landed just in front of the Oak Ridge center fielder and McVay went to third.  Johnson stole second, Eftink was hit by a pitch to load the bases with only one out, but the Eagles would score no more...in that inning.

Oran picked up in the fourth where they left off in the third.  Hahn led off with a single to left then stole second.  Reischman was then plunked by a pitch.  Both runners moved up 90 feet after a wild pitch.  Another pitch got a way from the catcher and Hahn tried to score, but the catcher tossed the ball to the pitcher covering home.  He made the tag and Hahn was called out.  Sauceda then walked and Shoemaker was once again called upon to run.  He stole second.  Overfield hit a ground ball that was booted by the shortstop, allowing Reischman to score. McVay then hit a massive shot over the left field fence for a three-run homer and the lead was 10-0.

The Eagles picked up their final tally after a lead off walk to Elfrink an error on a ground ball hit by Hahn, a ground out by Reischman and then on another error on a ball hit by Sauceda.

Hahn (1-1) went the first three innings to pick up the win.  He allowed only 1 hit, striking out 4 and walking 1.  He hit 1 batter.  Johnson went an inning picking up 3 strikeouts.   Overfield also went an inning and struck out 2.  Neither of the relievers allowed a hit.

McVay went 2 for 3 with his home run and double.  He drove in 4.  Hahn was 2 for 3 also.  He had 2RBI.

Oran swiped 8 bases on the day, 2 each by Priggel, Hahn, Shoemaker and Johnson.

After the game Head Coach Joe Bickings said, "It was nice to finally get back out there and play a baseball game after having another week off due to rain. We went in and took care of business and came out with a win that we really needed right now. Overall, we pitched fairly well and did a good job hitting the baseball. I know we had a few balls that we hit hard that were hit right at them and that's how baseball is sometimes. We didn't play as well as I would of liked defensively by committing 4 errors and we didn't run the bases very well either. Those are things we have to shore up as the season goes along if we want to compete for a district championship."
