The Oran High School girls basketball team saw their first action last night at a jamboree hosted by Charleston.
The Eagles defeated the hosts, 30-19. The won over Portageville 33-10 and flew past East Prairie 29-6. The teams played 2 six minute periods.
In the opener, sophomore Leah Cauble scored 15, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Classmate Jessie Long had 7 points and 5 boards. Freshman Kaylee Payne had 5 points and 4 rebounds. The lone senior, Brianna Stause hit a trey for her 3 points and sophomore Madison Ramsey made a free throw.
Kenzie Graviett, Claire Ramsey, Katelyn Streeter, Savannah Below, Heather Gosche and Taylor Lowes also saw action in game 1.
They hit 47.8% (11-23) from inside the arc but only 14.3% (1-7) from beyond. At the free throw line, they were 6-17 for 35.3%.
Cauble scored 20 in game 2, the 33-10 win over the Bulldogs. She also had 4 steals and 3 assists. Payne scored 5. Madison Ramsey hit a trey. Long and Stause both added 2. Graviett, a junior, added a single tally. Long grabbed 4 rebounds.
Claire Ramsey, Streeter, Gosche and Lowes all played but did not break into the scoring column.
Shooting improved for the Eagles as they hit 11-17 from inside for 64.7% and 3-10 for 30% from beyond. They were 2 of 4 on free tosses for 50%.
In the nightcap, Cauble once again led the way as Oran defeated East Prairie 29-6. She scored 18. Claire Ramsey had 4 points, including a trey, and 4 rebounds. Payne also had 4 points and she picked up 4 steals. Madison Ramsey also hit a trey. Long added 3 boards and 3 steals.
Graviett, Streeter, Below, Paige Bradley, Gosche and Lowes saw the floor.
The team hit 4 of 17 from three-point land for 23.5%. Closer in they were 7-15 for 46.7%. At the line, they hit 3 of 4 for 75%.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "I thought our defense looked pretty good in all 3 games. We got after it in the press and turned the other teams over quite a bit. Offensively we missed a lot of easy shots and a ton of free throws, especially in the 1st game. We need to do a better job in the half court set and get in better shape so we don't get wore out as quick on the press."
The regular season kicks off next Monday when they travel to class 3 Malden for a 6 pm tip.
