Girls varsity falls to Naylor

It was the kind of game that just rips your heart out.  The Oran High School girls varsity basketball team led for 30 of the 32 minutes against the Naylor Eagles but couldn't hang on down the stretch losing 53-52 at the Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at Charleston High School.

Oran was on top 18-10 after one.  They were able to stretch it up into double-digits at times and led 31-24 at the break.

Oran maintained a five-point margin 45-40 heading into the final eight minutes.

Naylor took its first lead with about 2 minutes remaining and the lead flip-flopped several times.  Naylor took the lead for good with about 5 seconds remaining when they scored on a putback.

Oran rushed the ball up the court but could not get off a good shot.

An obviously disappointed Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "It was a tough loss, we controlled most of the game but couldn't finish. I thought we rebounded well the first half but not as much the second half. Our defensive effort was pretty good and we moved the ball well the first half against them. We had too many silly turnovers coming down the stretch and didn't protect the ball when we had a chance to run time off the clock. Hopefully, we will learn from this and get better going forward."

Leah Cauble led Oran with 25 points.  She hit 2 from beyond the arc and was 5-6 from the line.  She also led the team with 7 rebounds, and 5 steals.  Jessie Long scored 11.  She was also 5-6 on free throws.

Kaylee Payne added 7 including a trey.  Brianna Stause hit 2 from long-range for her points, she grabbed 5 boards and had a team-high 4 assists.  Caire Ramsey hit a long-range bomb.

Kenzie Graviett and Kaitlyn Streeter played but did not score.

The Eagles were 12-29 from inside the arc for 41.4% and 6-23 from beyond for 26,1%.  The squad hit 10 out of 13 of their free throws for 76.9%.

Oran is now 17-2 on the year and will be back in action on Thursday when travel to take in conference foe Charleston.  It will be varsity only and tip at 6 pm.

Naylor has ended the Eagles season the past 2 years. In 2015, Oran dropped the sectional game 59-31 and last year they fell 61-42, also during the sectional round.
