The Oran High School girls basketball teams split their games on the road last night at conference rival Chaffee. The junior varsity lost it's first of the year 41-26, while the varsity used its defense to hold the Lady Devils to only 22 points in a 62-22 rout.
The JV fell behind early and could never get going. After one they were down 6, 13-7. The margin was up to 13 heading into the fourth. They were down 20 about halfway through the final period and then went on a 6-0 spurt but that was all the life they showed. The Eagles got no closer.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "Our effort lacked both on the offensive and defensive ends. We didn’t attack the hole when we had the chance and we gave up way too many offensive rebounds. I’m not sure if it was a result of not playing in over a week or some remaining sickness or both. Hopefully, we can learn from this and get back on track Thursday."
Katelyn Streeter led Oran, now 5-1 and 1-1, with 10 points. She hit both of her free throw attempts.
Savannah Below scored 6 and Heather Gosche added 5. Taylor Lowes hit a trey in the first quarter for her points and Paige Bradley chipped in 2. Madison Ramsey played but did not score.
Polar opposites in the second game.
The Eagles used a vice-like defense to clamp down on Chaffee. The Lady Devils were held to 7 first half points and did not score during the fourth. A 15-15 third was the only blemish on the scorecard.
According to Evans, "This was our best defensive effort yet this year. Even though we missed some shots we normally make we were able to win comfortably by causing havoc on the press. I was impressed with our rebounding against a taller Chaffee team."
Leah Cauble outscored the hosts on her own, with 30. She had a trey and 6 rebounds. Jessie Long also had 6 rebounds to go along with her 9 points. Brianna Stause had 7 including a three-pointer. Stause added 7 steals and 4 assists. Claire Ramsey hit one from beyond the arc as part of her 6. She grabbed 5 boards. Kaylee Payne had 5 points. She committed 5 steals and had 4 rebounds. Kenzie Graviett chipped in 4 and was 2-2 from the line. Katelyn Streeter played but did not score.
As a team, they hit 51% from inside the arc (20-39) and 23% from beyond (3-13). They hit 13-23 from the charity stripe on 13-23 shooting.
This was the third win over the Lady Devils this season. Oran won 81-46 during the Chaffee tournament and 54-37 during the conference tournament at Delta.
The varsity improved to 16-1 overall and 3-0 in the Scott-Miss. Chaffee is also a district opponent, which means there could be a fourth meeting in the post-season.
Oran will be back in action on Thursday at 6 pm when they travel to take on another conference foe, Kelly.
