The Oran High School boys basketball teams picked up two conference wins last night over the visiting Oak Ridge Blue Jays. The junior varsity avenged last week's conference tournament upset loss in overtime with a 52-36 comeback decision and the varsity led start to finish, picking up a 67-32 victory.
It looked like the younger boys would cruise after they led 11-5 after the first quarter, but then turnovers and missed shots would become the order of the day and the Eagles would not score again until the third period. The score at intermission was 23-11.
After the Blue Jays scored the first points of the second half, Oran finally came alive. Increased defensive pressure and a hot shooting hand from Landon Standberry, who scored 14 of his game-high 18 during the stanza, allowed the hosts to win the quarter 25-4 and take a 36-27 lead into the final frame. The momentum continued and the Eagles picked up the 16 point win.
Stanberry finished with 18 including a trey. Tyson Goodale scored 12 of his 14 in the second half. Freshman Todd Priggel made his debut during the game, saw action in three quarters and scored 10 points.
Jakob Findley had 6 points, Calen Read 3 and Avery Mitchem 1.
Tristen Schlosser, Kaiden Massey and Carson Moyers played but did not score.
The team was 5 for 9 from the line for 56%.
They are now 4-7 overall and 3-1 in league play.
In the nightcap, Oran jumped out quickly. They were leading 13-2 when Oak Ridge took their first timeout with 2:16 remaining in the initial period and led 18-4 after 1.
The lead remained 14 at the break as Layne Johnson hit a long 3 as the horn sounded. It was 30-16.
Early in the third, the Eagles put the game away. Todd Priggel made his varsity debut, Oran put on the press and Priggel's presence at the point of the defense, helped blow the game open. The Eagles were up 45-21 when the Jays took a timeout with 1:56 remaining in the quarter.
Oran went on to 35 point rout that saw much of the final period played with a running clock.
Max Priggel led all scorers and was one of 4 Eagles in double digits, with 20. He hit 2 from beyond the arc, made both free throw attempts and had 6 rebounds. Jacob Shoemaker had 13 with 3 treys, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Johnson scored 11, including that halftime buzzer-beater and both of his free throws. He also grabbed 7 boards, had 3 assists and snatched 4 steals. Cole Priggel added 10, had 6 rebounds and also dished out 3 assists.
Drew Reischman had 7 points, Todd Priggel 4 and Wyatt Kinney rounded out the scoring with 2.
Luke Barnes, Bradley Brooks, Denver Elfrink, William Kluesner, Peyton McVay and Joey Phillips all saw the floor but did not score.
As a team, the varsity was 21 of 37 from inside the arc for 49% and 6 of 18 from beyond for 33%. At the free throw line they hit just 7 of 13 for 53%.
They are now 10-7 and 4-1.
The Eagles will be back in action Friday evening when they travel to Leopold. There will be only 2 quarters of junior varsity action followed by the varsity game. Tip time is 6 pm.
