The Oran Eagles baseball team picked up a big win on Thursday as they defeated the Class 4 Sikeston Bulldogs on the road 10-2.
Layne Johnson was stellar on the mound, as he a went 6 2/3 innings, gave up the 2 earned runs on 6 hits and walked 2 while striking out 7. He improved his record to 5-1 and the team is now 10-2. Drew Reischman got the last out after walking one.
At the plate, Reischman went 4-4. He scored once and drove in one. He improved his team-leading batting average to an impressive .652. Austin Eftink had 2 hits on the day and had 2 rbi. Johnson also drove in two to help his cause. Clay Sauceda and Jacob Shoemaker also picked up ribbies. Sauceda leads the team in that category with 24.
Oran jumped on top with 4 in the second as they sent nine to the plate. They used 4 walks, 2 singles and a sacrifice fly.
It was 5-0 after the third when Drew Mitchem was hit by a pitch leading off. He came around on a pair of wild pitches sandwiched around a Reischman single.
The Bulldogs got their runs in the fourth with a double, a walk and a couple of singles.
Sikeston would not have another baserunner until the 7th and by then the game was all but decided.
The Eagles put the game away with a 5 run sixth. That inning featured 7 walks and Reischman's 4th single of the day.
The Bulldogs had a two-out single and walk before Reischman enticed an infield pop up to Mitchem at third to end the contest.
It was the second year in a row that Oran has defeated their much larger opponent to the south.
Sikeston used 8 different pitchers during the game. They started their conference tournament this afternoon.
Oran faces Kelly at their place on Tuesday at 4:30 pm. Wednesday's game that was scheduled at home against Sikeston has been canceled.
