To say that the Oran High School girls softball team rode the pitching arm during yesterday's 11-0 five-inning victory at Leopold, of freshman Sam Welter, would not come as a surprise to any that follow the Lady Eagles. But, if you mention that her bat would also make the highlight reel, then that might raise some eyebrows.
Welter came into the district affair batting .275 with 3 RBI and only 2 extra base hits all season long. Yesterday she pounded 2 home runs and is now tied with Jessie Long and Leah Cauble for the team-lead in that category.
In the circle, she scattered 2 hits and never allowed a Wildcat past second base. She struck out 2 and walked none in picking up her 9th win of the season.
Coach Jim Eftink said, "What a game by Sam! Not only did she toss another shutout but she had a big day at the plate with two dingers.
Cauble went 3-4 with 2 driven in. Claire Ramsey also drove in 2. Sydney Kern had 2 hits as did Long, who had a RBI. Payne had the only other extra-base hit, a double.
"Everyone's hitting right now and that's a good sign heading into districts. Hopefully, we'll catch a break in the weather and get in the rest of this week's games." Eftink added.
The Lady Eagles scored 4 in the first, 4 more in the fourth and 3 in the fifth inning of the mercy-rule affair. Welter's blasts came in back to back trips to the plate in the fourth and fifth innings.
Oran will hit the field again today when they host Scott County Central at 4:30.
