The Oran High School Lady Eagles softball team jumped out early and then coasted to a 14-4 six-inning victory yesterday at Advance over the Hornets.
Oran sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored eight runs on eight hits to blow the game open early. The Eagles then controlled the hosts the rest of the way by allowing only one hit, a fifth-inning double.
Sophomore Sam Welter picked up the win, going the first four and one-third innings. She allowed the hit, gave up four runs (three earned), walked eight and struck out three. Freshman Alyssa Spane went the final one and two-thirds and struck out two. She got out of a jam in the fifth inning by striking out the first batter she faced and then snaring a line drive back up the middle.
Offensively, Sydney Kern led Oran with a three for five performance at the plate, including a triple. She scored four runs and drove in two. She also stole two bases. Kaylee Payne was also three of five. She had a pair of doubles and drove in four. Leah Cauble also had three hits in five at bats. Cauble also had a pair of steals. Jessie Long and Kaitlyn Streeter each went two for three with two RBI.
Coach Jim Eftink told the blog, "[It was]great to get the rust off! The girls had an awesome first inning with several hard hits; they made really good contact!
[We] ended up getting 16 of the 17 players in the game. We have a strong bench and it was good to have them involved in this first game of the season.
Defensively, we made several good plays. A couple of standouts were a fly ball in left that Katelyn had to come a long way to get. Kaylee also made a nice play to her right and made a throw from deep in the hole. That was an impressive throw to first."
Oran hits the field today for its home-opener taking on an 0-1 Bloomfield Wildcat squad at home at 4:30.
