The Oran High School baseball team picked up its first win of the year last night under the lights in Advance defeating Bloomfield 6-0 in a make up of a rainout earlier in the week.
Todd Priggel got the start on the mound and had to work out of a first-inning jam. The lead-off man reached on a single. An error followed. And then a walk. The next batter struck out. Then the Eagles may have caught a break. The following batter hit a little pop up out in front of the plate. It was not called an infield fly. It hit the ground. Ty Johnson retrieved the ball and alertly stepped on the plate and then threw to third to complete the inning-ending double play.
The Eagles would score the only run they would need in the bottom of the second without the benefit of a hit. Cole Priggel led off with a walk. Jacob Shoemaker and Lane Peterson walked back-to-back with one out. With two down, Layne Johnson forced in a run with the fourth walk of the inning.
The Eagles picked up nine free passes during the game.
The score was still 1-0 entering the top of the third when a pair singles sandwiched around an error loaded the bases again with no one out.
This time Oran went to the bullpen and brought in Layne Johnson from center field. Johnson promptly struck out the side to end the threat.
The Eagles wasted a pair of singles to open their half of the third by Drew Reischman and Clay Sauceda.
But, they were able to push across a run in the fourth.
It was a two-out walk to Cole Priggel that started thing. He moved to third on an errant pick-off attempt and came home on Drew Reischman's rbi single.
Meanwhile, Johnson kept Bloomfield in check.
He struck out the first five he faced before he gave up a walk. He then retired the next four, before giving way to Reischman in the sixth.
Oran picked up another tally in the fifth, to make it 3-0. Cole Priggel walked to lead off. He stole second and was awarded third on a balk. He came home on Jacob Shoemaker's one-out single on a 1-2 pitch.
The Eagles put up a three-spot in the sixth to put the game on ice.
In that inning, Layne Johnson worked a lead-off walk and that was followed by consecutive singles by Todd Priggel, Reischman, Sauceda and Cole Priggel to make the final score 6-0.
Coach Joe Bickings said, "It was good to get the first win of the season and be able to battle some adversity early on and overcome it. We had too many errors to start the game that allowed Bloomfield to get extra outs. Fortunately for us, we were able to get out of two different innings where Bloomfield had the bases loaded and nobody out without them scoring. That is huge and shows a lot of character about this baseball team. Another problem that we are facing is that we are striking out way too much and for the most part with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs. You have to put the ball in play and make the other team handle it. We struck out 9 times and in this game, we were only allowed 18 outs because we didn't bat in the bottom of the 7th. It's not a good thing when half of our outs are via strikeouts. I feel like we still have a lot of improving to do to get to where we want to be. The good thing is that it is still early in the season (and there is time) to fix some of the issues that we are facing."
Todd Priggel (1-0) picked up the win going two innings. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out two. Layne Johnson went three, allowing no hits. He walked one and struck out seven.
Reischman (0-1) picked up the save. He went two innings, he walked two, hit a batter and struck out four.
Oran will be back in action on Saturday when they host Dexter at 11 am and Valle Catholic about 3 pm.
