Boys move on

The Oran High School boys basketball team used a tried and true formula to advance from the state sectional round on to the quarterfinals with its 69-41 defeat of Valle Catholic last night at Jackson High School.

The two teams were tied at 13 after one period.  Neither team scored for the first four minutes of the second period and when the Eagles took a time out with 1:56 remaining before the half, they led 19-15.  As they did against Oak Ridge in the district finals on Friday, Oran, who led 24-17 at the break, went on a run.  At the 3:36 mark of the third, the Eagles were up, 39-17.  Oran outscored Valle 56-28 after the first period.

Jacob Shoemaker had a game-high 24 points and led the team with nine rebounds.  He made two from beyond the arc and was one of four Eagles in double-digits.  Tyson Goodale had 17 including a trey.  Todd Priggel scored 15 and Ty Johnson added 10 and had four assists.

Langdon Scheeter rounded out the scoring with three and dished out four assists as well.

The Eagles hit 14 of 21 from the line for 67%.  They were 23 of 36 from inside the arc for 64% and 3 of 9 from beyond for 33%.  Oran outrebounded Valle 28-21.  The Warriors committed 21 turnovers, while the Eagles had 12.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we were able to speed them up and create some turnovers which helped us to score.  I was happy with our defense to hold their top three scorers to 9 total points.  We will have to play better Saturday in order to win."

They improved their record to 28-1 and will face Portageville on Saturday at 1 pm at 3Rivers College.  The Bulldogs defeated Thayer last night, 43-41 and have a record of 22-6.  I was told that the game would be played in the new Libla Family Sports Complex which is located across from the Bess Activity Center, where we've played in the past.  If there are any changes I will post as soon as I can.
