The Oran High School softball team came from behind for the second game in a row and defeated the Delta Bobcats, yesterday by a score of 14-7 at home to improve to 2-2.
Delta scored three off of starter Kaylee Payne in the first using a triple, a ground out, two walks and a single.
Oran got those plus one in their half. Payne singled, Leah Cauble homered, Claire Ramsey doubled and then with two down Katelyn Streeter and Rylee Boshell singled.
The Bobcats tied it up in the next half inning, after a one-out single and a two-out double, Delta knotted it at four. Payne also issued two walks in the inning but was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam with a ground out.
The Eagles put up four more in their half. Taylor Lowes led off with a single and then Ramsey singled with two down, Jessie Long reached on an error, Samantha Welter cleared the bases with a double and scored on Streeter's single.
Payne allowed a leadoff single in the fourth, but then struck out the side.
A single to start the fifth would end Payne's day in the circle. Alyssa Spane took over. After an error, a couple of fielder's choices and a single, Delta picked up a run to make it 8-5.
Oran got that run back with a base on balls, a single and two fielder's choices.
It was 9-5 heading into the sixth as the Lady Bobcats plated two more on three singles and an error.
The Eagles iced it in the bottom half, however, by scoring five. The big blows included a three-run homer by Welter and a two-run double by Payne.
Spane retired the side in the bottom of the seventh on the three ground outs.
Payne (2-0) picked up the win for Oran (2-2). She went three innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits. She walked four and struck out seven. Spane went four innings. She gave up two runs, one earned. She allowed four hits and struck out three and was credited with a save.
Welter had a huge day at the plate, going 2-4 and driving in seven runs. Ramsey was 4-4. Payne, Cauble and Boshell each drove in two.
Coach Jim Eftink said, "[We] had some big hits today. Leah set the tone in the first with a home run and then Sam put the exclamation point on the victory with her homer in the sixth. Lots of hits in between those homers. Claire went 4 for 4. And it was nice to see Taylor and Riley pick up a pair of hits. We’re getting the hitting but we’ve still got some work to do in other areas. Like most teams this early in the season we’re still feeling our way."
