Softball loses opener

The Oran High School softball team dropped its season-opener yesterday afternoon at home to rival Scott City.  The Lady Rams won 7-2.

The Lady Eagles scored first.  In their first at-bat, Oran had back-to-back doubles by Kaylee Payne and Samantha Welter.

But, after a one-two-three first, Scott City sandwiched a pair of errors around a single that was followed by another single to score three unearned runs off of sophomore starter Alyssa Spane.

The Rams added single tallies in the third and the fifth on home runs.

Oran plated a run in the fifth, as once again Payne led off with a double.  She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jessie Long's one-out groundout.

Scott City would add two more in the seventh.  They used a single, a walk and another single and a ground out to finish the day's scoring.  With runners on first and third and two down the Rams sent the runner from first, but freshman Rylee Boshell threw a strike to Payne covering second to nail the runner and retire the side.

Payne was  2-4 with two doubles and scored both runs.  Welter also had two hits including a double and a run driven in.  Leah Cauble and Long each had a single apiece.  Long also drove in a run.

Spane went the distance in the circle.  She allowed seven runs, but only three earned. She gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out nine.

Coach Jim Eftink said, "We did have some good moments. Kaylee and Sam had four of our seven hits. Those two gave us some momentum in the bottom of the first when we had a chance to blow the game open.  On the mound, Alyssa had nine strikeouts.  That’s pretty good when you consider Scott City is the number one ranked team in the state."

Eftink added, "We’ll put some work in and get ready for our next game—which is now Friday. We picked up a game against Twin Rivers. That game will be our first road game."

As he mentioned, Thursday's game with Advance has been canceled and a game at Twin Rivers on Friday has been added.  Game time is 4:30.
