Baseball opens with big win

The Oran High School baseball team opened its season yesterday with a 14-4 five-inning victory at Bloomfield.

The Eagles sent 12 to the plate and scored seven in the top of the first.  They used seven hits and four Wildcat errors to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Bloomfield would use a couple of slow-rolling ground balls to the outfield, an error and a wild pitch, to plate a pair of runs off of starter Todd Priggel.

Oran got those two back in the second with a single and four walks.

Three more Eagles crossed in the third using three more walks, a single and a Ty Johnson triple.

The Wildcats got one back in their half with a couple of infield singles and a ground out, making the score 12-3.

In the fourth, the Eagles used a walk and four consecutive single to add two to the board.

Bloomfield used a hit batter, a walk and a bloop single to get one back, in their half, off of reliever Johnson.

Neither team scored in the fifth.

A clean-shaven coach Joe Bickings said, "Getting the first win of the season on the first game is always a nice way to start the season.  I really like how we came out and swung the bats early and put up a 7 spot in the first inning.  That allows for all of the pre-game jitters to calm even before we take the field.  I felt like we swung the bats fairly well for only the second time seeing live pitching all year.  We scored 14 runs with our one-two-three hitters only producing one hit.  But they walked three times and scored five runs just by getting on base.  If the bottom of the order can keep hitting and then the top of our order starts rolling, it will give us a better chance of winning."

He added, "With basketball making the run to the state championship game we only had about five or six practices with everyone there.  With the lack of preparation and with us being so young, I couldn’t be more proud of us yesterday.  I thought Todd [Priggel] and Ty [Johnson] did a good job on the mound.  Todd struggled a little in his first inning but I feel like that had a lot to do with him warming up a little too early before the game and then also having to sit through a long first half of an inning before he pitched.  After that first inning, I thought he did really well.  His last inning he was unfortunate to give up a run with a ball never leaving the infield.  Ty then came in and was a little shaky early but settled down nicely in his two innings of work.  With that being their first times on the mound I was pleased because we were able to work ahead most of the time and make quality pitches."

Johnson was 4-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBI.  On the mound, he gave up one unearned run on one hit and one walk, while striking out six in two innings.  Priggel picked up the win throwing the first three.  He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits.  He walked two and struck out seven. At the plate, he singled, walked, scored twice

Luke Patterson was on base all four plate appearances with two hits, including a double and two walks.  He scored three times and drove in two.  Kaden Hargrove also had two hits with one being a two-bagger.  He drove in two, as well.  Dawson Menz had a pair of singles and a pair of base on balls. He had one run batted in.  Seth Cauble added a single and drove in two.  Avery Mitchem also had a single and an RBI.  Jacob Shoemaker added a run and a run batted in.

Baseball will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Ste. Genevieve for a bonus day doubleheader at Valle Catholic.

Note the updated game times:  Oran will face Valle at 11am and then Dexter following at 1 pm.
