The Oran Junior High School boys basketball teams hosted the Oak Ridge blue Jays last night. The seventh-grade lost 32-27 and the eighth fell, 58-32.
In the opener, the hosts trailed by one, 18-17, heading into the fourth quarter but got outscored by four.
Brison Winchester led the Eagles with 15, including a trey and 2-2 from the line.
Giddeon Davis scored seven and Roma Schlosser chipped in five.
Coach Joe Bickings, "[This] was a game we could have won but we were careless with the basketball when we were leading late in the game and turned the ball over. We also missed too many shots from inside the paint. We also can't keep doing the same things over and over again and thinking the results are going to be different. There were plenty of teachable moments that we have to learn from last night in order for us to win the close games in the future. The good news is that we were in the game and had a chance to win."
The younger team was 4-12 from the line, while the Blue Jays were 9-16 and 7-10 in the final period.
The seventh-grade is now 1-2 and 1-6
In the night cap, Oran trailed 38-16 at the intermission on the way to a 26-point defeat.
Nate Pobst led Oran with 12.
Drake Dannenmueller scored seven, Elijah Shoemaker had six. Jase Fuemmeler hit a trey for his points and Andrew Dennis and A.J. McNeely each added a field goal.
Bickings said "- Oak Ridge is a very athletic group and they gave us problems defensively. They pressured us and we threw it away a few times. We were able to break the press and get some easy baskets but we struggled with their athleticism with our defense. We seemed to be a step or two late and we got in some early foul trouble because of it. We didn't quit and kept playing and battling which was nice to see. We just made too many mistakes on offense and didn't rebound well enough to keep it close."
The older group is 1-3 and 2-6. They were only 1 of 6 from the line.
The teams travel to Chaffee on Monday. Game time is 6 pm.
