Boys split at Bernie

The Oran High School boys basketball teams traveled to Bernie on Monday to face the Mules.  The junior varsity lost 61-32.  The varsity won a defensive thriller in overtime 47-45.

In the opener, the jayvee trailed by five after one and the hosts expanded their lead each period thereafter.

Kolen Payne led the Eagles with 12 points, including a trey.

Nick Romas had six points.  Landon Cochran and Robby Menz both had three, while Diesel Cato, Seth Cauble, Luke Peterson and Camdyn Triblett added a field goal each.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "I didn't feel like we came out ready to play mentally at all.  It didn't help us at all that we missed a lot of shots early on and didn't guard very well.  We have had two bad games in a row now when we should be starting to play our best basketball. Hopefully, this game was a good reality check for our team."

They were 3-10 from the line and fell to 10-2.

The nightcap was a defensive slugfest.  Oran led 11-5 after one, but it was tied at 15 heading into the halftime locker room.  The Eagles were on top 31-30 heading into the final eight minutes.  At the end of regulation, it was knotted at 45. Langdon Scheeter hit a tear-drop runner late to tie the game.  He also hit 6-6 free throws in the fourth, he was 8-8 on the night.

In the extra period, the only scoring was two free throws by Tyson Goodale, who also came up with a steal late to secure the victory.

Goodale led all scorers with 17 and he had a team-high eight rebounds. and Scheeter added 16.

Cooper Priggel had six points, including a trey.  Priggel led the team in assists with four.  Dane Shands and Samuel Shoemaker had three points apiece.  Shands' came on a three-pointer.

Ty Johnson, who was saddled with foul troubles rounded out the scoring with a field goal.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "We played a very good team on their home floor which is a tough place to win at.  We persevered through some foul trouble and were able to pick up a quality win in overtime.  We had several "big time" plays from different players in different parts of the game and everyone will remember those at the end of the game but in this close of a game, every play counts.  I want to give a shout out to the bench even those who didn't get a lot of minutes for having a great practice in preparation for this game.  Without them and their efforts in practice, we wouldn't have picked up this win.  A total team effort.  Now the challenge is to come out mentally ready to play vs Chaffee."

They made 14-34 from inside the arc for 40%, 2 of 7 from beyond for 28.6% and 13-15 from the line for 86.7%.  They outrebounded their hosts 26-25 and forced one more turnover than they committed 16-15.  With the win, they improved to 13-2.
