Both JHBB teams entered the 4th quarter with leads last night at Scott City, both teams ended up with losses.
In the 7th grade contest, the Eagles held a slim 28-26 lead entering the final 6 minutes. But a 16-11 final period allowed the Rams to pick up the victory 42-39. Once again poor free throw shooting would cost Oran. The Eagles were only 5 of 13 from the stripe. On the other hand, Scott City was 14-27 on the night and 10-17 in the final period alone.
Tyson Loper led the team with 18 points, Landon Standberry chipped in 10. The 7th grade now stands at 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
For the 8th grade, a commanding 12 point lead slipped by the wayside in the 4th. The Eagles were up 39-27 with 6 minutes remaining before a combination of foul trouble, sloppy execution on offense and a red-hot Scott City guard caught up with Oran. The Rams outscored Oran 23-6 in that fateful final quarter.
Jacob Shoemaker fouled out mid way through the 4th, while Layne Robinson was saddled with 4 fouls much of the 2nd half. Also, several trips down the floor the Eagles were unable to get a shot off because of turnovers. Perhaps the biggest factor in that last period was the shooting of Ram guard Eli Berry. Berry led all scorers with 26 points, with 15 during the late rally.
Oran's leading scorer was Jacob Shoemaker. He scored 22 before fouling out. Layne Robinson added 12.
Free throw shooting was also a factor in the night cap. Oran was only able to connect on 3 of 10 while Scott City cashed in on 10 of 19.
The elder Eagles fall to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Both teams will look to resume their winning ways Thursday as they travel to Oak Ridge to take on the Blue Jays at 6 pm.
