One knew that going into last night's high school girls basketball game at Saxony Lutheran it would be a tough task for the Oran Eagles to come out with a "W".
First, winning at Saxony is difficult at best. Second, when the two teams met earlier on a neutral site, the Eagles were fortunate to come away victorious. In fact, in my opinion, the Crusaders lost the game as much if not more than Oran won it. And third, the Eagles were still recovering from the illnesses that plagued them the final two nights of the last week's Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament. Last night's junior varsity game was canceled due to too many sick Eagles.
So, during the perfect storm, as it were, the home team outscored Oran 50-23 over the middle two quarters. They also forced a season-high 22 turnovers enrout to 78-49 final. Sending the Eagles home with their first loss of the season.
Head coach Ethan Evans said, "Our defensive and rebounding efforts were not very good. Any time you give up that many points you know you are lacking on defensive pressure. On the offensive side of the ball, we couldn’t really get into a flow after the first quarter. We had too many turnovers and we didn’t do a very good job of running our offense. Hopefully, this game will be a wake-up call for us and we can get back to playing the way we are capable of."
Leah Cauble led all scorers with 31. She hit 4 from beyond the arc, was 3-8 from the line and dished out 3 assists.
Brianna Stause hit 3 treys for her 9 points. Kaylee Payne scored 4 and grabbed 5 rebounds. Claire Ramsey was 3 of 4 from the charity stripe for her tallies. Jessie Long hit one field goal, snared 5 boards and was credited with 3 steals. Katelyn Streeter played but did not score.
As a team, they hit only 35% from inside the arc (8-23), but were 39% from beyond (7-18). They hit 12 of 17 from the free throw line for 70.6%.
Oran is now 14-1 on the year and will travel to Delta for an S-MC matchup on Thursday. The latest information that we have received indicates there will not be a JV game. Tip time is still scheduled for 6 pm.
