What's happenin' (1/9-1/13)
Another full week of high school hoops coming up. But before we go there, I wanted to toss this observation out.
You know how we always hear you can't compare scores because there are just too many variables or whatever? Well, I'm here to tell you that you can. Earlier this season, the Saxony girls defeated Twin Rivers by 8 points. Last Thursday Oran beat Saxony by 2. Yesterday, Oran beat Twin Rivers by 10. So...Saxony was 8 points better than Twin Rivers, we were 2 points better than Saxony by comparing scores we would be 10 points better than Twin Rivers. I guess you can compare scores, sometimes, but you just don't know when until afterward.
Well, enough of that nonsense.
The girls Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament will tip off at Delta on Monday and there will be four varsity contests. Oran, the defending champs, got the number one seed and will play number eight seed Scott City at 7 pm. The Eagles have an 11-0 record and defeated the 0-9 Rams 97-25 during the Red Devil Invitational.
There has been a location change for Tuesday's boys contest against conference foe Kelly. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Kelly, however, due to some floor repairs taking the place the game has been moved to Oran. Oran's varsity is 6-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The junior varsity is 2-6 and 1-1. Kelly's varsity is 2-9 and 1-1. Game time is 6 pm.
The girls junior varsity team will hit the court for the first time in nearly a month when they play at Delta on Wednesday at 5:30 pm. The Eagles, the number 2 seed, with a 3-0 record, will face the number 3 seeded Kelly Hawks. Should the seedings from Monday's varsity games, the varsity will play at 7 pm against the winner of Monday's Chaffee/Delta matchup.
You're gonna have to make a choice on Thursday as the conference tourney will wrap up at Delta.
The jv 3rd place game is at 4 pm, the championship game is at 5:30. Oran's jayvee will play at one of those times. The schedule for the varsity is; 3rd place 7 pm and the title game is at 8:30.
The boys game that was originally scheduled for Thursday at home with Woodland has been re-scheduled for Monday, January 30th at 6 pm. The game will be played at Oran. (edit 1/9/2017 at 3:40 pm)
Also on Thursday, the boys will host Woodland at 6 pm. The Cardinals enter the week at 9-3. These 2 teams have developed a nice rivalry over the past couple of years. Last year, the Eagles lost twice to Cards, in overtime at the Christmas tournament and by 1 at Woodland. The year before Oran picked up a thrilling come from behind victory at home.
On Friday, the boys have a key district matchup at St. Vincent of Perryville. The Indians are 9-3 entering the week. The winner of this game will more than likely receive the number 1 seed in the Class 2, District 2 tournament hosted by St. Vincent at the Perry Park Center starting February 18th.
