Eagles squeak past Tigers

The Oran High School boys basketball teams picked up two wins last night at home against non-conference rival Risco.

The junior varsity wore down a Tiger team that had only five players and picked up a 64-46 victory.

The varsity once again had to overcome a halftime deficit to eventually prevail 67-64 to improve to 3-0.

During the opener, Oran expanded a three-point first quarter lead into 16 point margin at the intermission.  They increased it to 30 after three before eventually winning by 18.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "We were able to get everyone playing time which is nice to get that game experience early in the year. I thought we were able to put more pressure on them defensively early in the second half and turned it into transition layups."

Tristin Schlosser had 18, including three treys.  Ty Johnson scored 15 and he hit two from beyond the arc.  Langton Scheeter had 13 and also hit a long-range bomb.

Dane Shands hit three three-pointers off the bench for his nine total points.  Cooper Priggel hit a trey to account for his three points.  Kaiden Massey also had three points.  Logan Rose and Cameron Westrich both scored two to round out the scoring.

They hit nine from beyond the arc as a team and were 5 of 6 from the line for 83%.

In the nightcap, the varsity rode the hot shooting of Jacob Shoemaker to capture an exciting come from behind win.

Oran trailed 19-17 after one.  During the first period, Shoemaker hit three-pointers on three consecutive offensive possessions.  At halftime, the Eagles were down 35-33.

After a shorter than normal locker room stay, the team huddled up just off the court before their second-half warm-ups.

When asked about it, Coach Shoemaker said, "My halftime speech was short and to the point.  I didn’t realize they huddled up to talk; that was all them."

Whatever was said seemed to work as Oran led after three 53-49.  After a nip and tuck fourth, the Eagles had a three-point win.

The coach added, "I thought the varsity had an emotional letdown and didn’t focus and play with the energy and intensity that we needed. Risco exposed some areas where we need to improve on especially defensively and we will address those in practice. It was nice to see some mental toughness from the players to battle through the adversity and get the win. It would have been easy for them to make excuses and give up but instead, as a group, they found a way to persevere."

Shoemaker finished with his 36 including eight from beyond the arc.  Tyson Goodale, who got the start in place of the injured Cole Priggel, had 11.

Layne Johnson, who was plagued with foul trouble, had nine including a trey before picking up his 5th foul in the fourth quarter.   Todd Priggel scored seven while Drew Reischman added four.

As a team, they too hit nine treys.  They hit only 53% of their free tosses (8-15).  Risco hit 8 from beyond the arc and was 8 for 12 from the line (75%).

The boys will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Scott City for a conference matchup with the Rams at 6 pm.
