Lady Eagles ride the 'wave

The Oran High School girls basketball team opened the season with a pair of big wins at home last night over the visiting Malden Greenwave.  The jayvee won 53-10 while the varsity soared to an 87-19 rout.

Coach Ethan Evans said of his younger team, "The girls did a fantastic job of getting the ball inside and using our height advantage. The defensive and rebounding efforts were solid and I was proud of the effort all around."

Oran led 32-10 at the break and tossed a shutout the second half.

Katie Webb scored 20 during only two-quarters of action.  Hope Woodfin finished with 17 including two treys.  Rylee Boshell hit for 10, off the bench.

Mallory Lowes added five and Traci Hency had a free throw.

The younger girls were 6 of 15 from the line for 40%.

In the nightcap, the home team jumped out to a 38-4 first-quarter lead and continued to roll from there on the way to a 68 point win.

Evans said, "We got off to a fantastic start by getting steals on the press and running the floor very well. We also did a good job of driving to the basket and getting to the free throw line."

Oran had four players reach double digits.  Leah Cauble had 41.  Kaylee Payne had 13, Jessie Long added 10 as did Webb.

Katelyn Streeter added five.  Savannah Below and Taylor Lowes had three each, and Heather Gosche had a field goal.

Long had a team-high six rebounds.  Cauble and Payne had four assists each.  Cauble also had six steals.

The varsity hit 28-46 from inside the arc for 61%.  From beyond, they were 4-14 for 29%. At the line, they were 19-28 for 68%

Evans said, "I thought it was a great first game by both teams."

The varsity will be back in action tonight when they host conference foe Scott Count Central at 6 pm.
