Oran defeats East Prairie

The Oran High School boys varsity basketball team remained undefeated after last night's 87-74 win over conference-rival East Prairie.  The junior varsity fell in a thrilling double-overtime affair, 52-48.

In the opener,  Oran trailed by three, 44-41,  in the waning seconds of regulation when Nick Romas drained a trey from the right corner to send it to the first overtime.  Romas would score the only points for the home squad in the first extra two minutes on free throws, but it was enough to extend the game further as East Prairie only managed a field goal.  Romas was the only offense in the second overtime, as well, once again on two free tosses.  This time, it wasn't enough as Oran was outscored 6-2 and fell just short.

Romas led his team with 15 points, all coming after halftime.  He hit three from beyond the arc and was 4-4 from the line.  Cooper Priggel finished with 11 including two three-pointers, in two quarters of action.

Cameron Westrich totaled eight points and Seth Cauble had six.  Samuel Shoemaker added four and Diesel Cato and Kaleb Gosche chipped in two apiece.

They were 5 for 8 from the line for 63% and saw their record drop to 0-2 in the Scott-Miss and 2-2 overall.  They will be back in action later today, at 5 pm at Advance taking on top-seeded Bloomfield in a quarterfinal matchup in the Advance JV Tournament.

In the nightcap, Oran was on top after every quarter.  In fact, the led by double-digits several times.  But each time Oran would look like they were going to put the game away, East Prairie would come roaring back.

In the third quarter, Oran had built 15 point lead only to see East Prairie tie the score at 61.  Ty Johnson was fouled with about six seconds remaining in the period.  He made his first free toss but missed the second.  Johnson hustled to track down the rebound, shoveled to Jacob Shoemaker and Shoemaker drained a three just before the buzzer.

Oran led 65-61 heading into the final frame and eventually expanded that lead, by outscoring the guests 22-13.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we played well. We still have to clean up some rebounding and defensive issues and we had just a couple of choices on offense that could have been better. It is still early in the year and hopefully, we can clean those up in practice as we prepare for a very good Delta team."

Jacob Shoemaker led all scorers with 39.  15 of those came during the first period, he had 17 at the half.  After intermission, East Prairie had a defender face-guard him. He scored 22 in the second half.  He nailed six three's.  Todd Priggel had 21.  He was 7 of 9 from the line, including 4-4 in the fourth.  Ty Johnson hit for 13 including three treys and Tyson Goodale added 12.

Langdon Scheeter scored two.

They were 18-27 for 67% at the free throw stripe and improved their mark to 2-0 and 6-0.

The jv and varsity will host Delta next Tuesday in another Scott-Miss showdown at 6 pm.
